Does anyone have any experience with FC?
If DS does get accepted by UMD, he will likely be a spring admit and will have to apply for FC? How do they determine whether or not you get accepted to FC? Are the number of spaces limited? |
|
I don't have any personal experience, but I have a senior who applied to UMD, so I've looked into it.
My understanding is that spring admits can either accept enrollment in FC, enroll in a first-semester abroad, or enroll in the spring and do whatever they want in the fall. I believe that the number of spaces in FC is limited and it's first come, first served. I have no idea if it normally fills up. In the fall semester, FC students can live on campus and take UMD classes (they have to take them M-TH between 3 and 9 pm). They might be the last ones able to register for spring classes. Good luck to your DS! |
| Thanks very much for the information. |

1. School will let you know
2. You can still take fall classes with some limitations 3. Once school starts, no one cares about your status so it’s a non issue 4. A lot of info on umd website. Have your kid check it out |
| Why does UMD do this? |
I assume it is to protect their reported stats. By admitting the lower stat kids for the spring semester they don't count in the reported statistics for Fall entrants. I just speculating and have no actual knowledge. |
Yes this is it.. |
School can handle more kids by spreading over 2 semesters. More kids means more money. |
| A good number of kids drop out after first semester so they have open slots in the spring. |
THIS people. Nothing to do with money or drop outs.
|
Not so but you do you. |
| Yes, they do this to protect their stats. That said, I know someone who started in spring for Berkeley and did fall in London and it's all been amazing. Makes no difference when you start. |
I've always heard this too, but DC and a close friend, both with high stats, were offered spring semester admission at UMD. Both kids ended up being admitted and attending top 25 universities (and in one case an Ivy). Just like everything else, there might be some other factors. |
| Has anyone been able to find any statistics (SAT/GPA) for the spring admitted students? Everything on the UMD website is for Fall admits only. |

My sophomore UMD daughter had a few friends in FC last year. FC kids take classes at night, which prevented them from being involved in a lot of activities. The kids have since acclimated fine.
Also, I am on a UMD parents FB page and the parents of FC kids have complained that they thought their kids would get extra help and support from UMD but did not. Good luck to your child! |
