Why I love my cleaning lady...

Anonymous
I love mine for many reasons but especially because of clutter: she caught me one time doing the last bit of pick up before she came and said ‘Stop! That’s what you pay me for!’ She picks up and organizes everything from the tiny little pieces of my DD playmobile houses and complex art projects to (for example) hand cleaning 2 dozen cookie cutters and frosting impliments. She cleans my fridge each week, opens 1/3 of the windows each times to clean inside & out. She makes the beds (and would do the sheets too but I have extra sets and like to line dry when possible.)

Yeahhh we’d go down to beans and rice before I gave her up. And yes! We are messy and I fully own that! My one prenup w/my DH was that I would never clean toilets.

It feels wrong to call her a cleaning lady because she has been doing more than that for last 15 years. Twice a week, 12 man hours. Very efficient and knows my house inside out. Since I pay by the hour, she will do everything that needs to be done to run a house smoothly. Laundry, cleaning, changing linens, windows, recycling, decluttering, organizing, food prep, cleaning car, garage, yard, babysitting, ironing, wrapping gifts etc. Basically she helps me to do whatever I need done.

I’m sure mine would do those things too. But it doesn’t make sense to pay her the extra 1-2 hours to do that. Plus I’d have to train her where everything goes. And if it’s more than 5 hours, she can only do one house a day. It’s better for her to do 4-5 hours and she can do another house that day.

Where do you find someone like that and how much do you pay?

We have been living overseas and have become accustomed to this approach... daily. We're really spoiled, I know, but I also wonder how it's going to work out when we return to the US.

I always straighten up before the cleaning crew comes, however my millenial son lives in the basement and leaves it a sight for them. Oddly enough they do a fantastic job down there, folding clothes and picking up trash and glasses and such, its amazing, and he could care less.

She started off just as a bi-weekly cleaning person at my house. I really liked her because of her attitude and the fact that she always had a smile on her face. She asked me for more work because some of her clients used to cancel on her frequently and she really needed x amount of income to survive. Since I am always working alongside her, I am able to guide her and she really understands what I need done. I pay her around $25 an hour, which is more than what she is being paid by others. She is super efficient and well worth the money, though it is by no means an insignificant cost to us. We have lived overseas too and we have been used to help. However, I think why it works for both of us is because I work alongside with her, pay her well, listen to her problems and generally treat her very well and with respect. She really looks out for my interests and how my house is running. She will always accommodate me if I have an urgent need for anything.
