Vegans, how do you get enough protein?

Anonymous
TBH, unless you're a competitive or enthusiastic body builder I don't think you'll find much problem finding sources of protein with the access we have nowadays. Getting enough nutrients like Vitabin B and iron is another story.

I wouldn't worry about it at all. Just eat a balanced vegan diet, and if you don't feel well, then you can try to add in some more protein.

Ex-vegan here. I used to do a lot of tempeh- it's supposed to be better than tofu- plus protein powders (which is tough, vegan protein powder is SO nasty). This guy has good nutritional advice, but keep in mind he's a powerlifter and can eat a ton of calories: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hHrysja5lYw

For what it's worth, I could never get enough protein to feel fully satisfied and eventually went back to eating animal products. I felt like crap for months until one day I gave in, cooked up a pound of bacon, fried a half a dozen eggs in the grease, and ate it all. I know a lot of ex-vegans who had the same problem. So take it easy on yourself if it doesn't work out, there's a lot of dogma and pressure within the vegan community.

Except for vegan children

That's a low bar, staying out of the hospital. How about feeling strong and energetic, instead of sluggish or weak?

LOL. Best comment of the thread.

Seafood has more protein and lower in carbs

I just finished my evening popcorn, on which I always sprinkle a teaspoon of nutritional/brewers yeast.... Yummy yummy cheesy popcorn goodness!

(I'm vegetarian, not vegan. I eat fish once a week and no longer feel protein-weak/deprived)

These comments about protein = meat are not factual. Tons of vegetables have protein. You can get lots of protein from beans, peas, seeds, lots of vegetables, nut milks.... No need for special powders or even tofu, tempeh, or seitan, etc. You'll be eating so many healthy leafy greens and other important foods like mushrooms in huge salads and bowls with beans, nuts and seeds. It all adds up. Read Joel Fuhrman's books. No one needs to eat meat. I'm mostly vegan due to an illness, not just for animal welfare, though I'm happy to cut back for that reason too.

You’re not vegetarian then, you are a pescatarian.

However, it can hardly be considered vegan. Or even vegetarian.

Fish are not vegetables or fruit. You are a pescatarian.

I’ve read that an average sized moderately active woman should get 50-60 grams of protein a day, and there’s no way I can get there just with quinoa, lentils, nuts and beans and stay within my calorie range. I sometimes eat tofu, but I have heard it’s not healthy to have it more than a couple times a week. Thoughts? I also do vegan protein powder in smoothies in the tsummer (would appreciate recommendations since the one I buy has a lot of additives), but not keen on smoothies in the winter. TIA!

Please, how is tofu unhealthy? Hww do you think that Asians outlive the rest of the world?

Surely a vegetarian of 30 years would know that eating fish is not vegetarian by any stretch of the imagination.
