I'm the pp they replied to but I agree with this person 100%. You don't just shut down shop because you got yours. Infrastructure growth doesn't happen before people move. It happens as needed. That's the way it will always be unless you think we're going to turn into a centrally planned economy like China where they built freeways that no cars were on for years. America doesn't do that. We need to allow development. Elrich's plan is quite literally out of communist China's playbook. LITERALLY. Central planning.

Why? Isn't the budget passed by the Council, not the County Exec? I think the CE can recommend a funding amount, but the Council can raise or lower it and ultimately has the say. It seems to me that the CE is in a limited position to influence schools via funding. I feel like he has much more sway in other areas.

I know Elrich is tight with the teachers union. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. I guess I lean towards bad if the unions make it harder to replace ineffective teachers. But I'm open to hearing why it's good. My understanding may be quite simplified.

The budget is recommended by the Executive and then modified/passed by Council. But whatever the Executive recommends sets the stage for what the Council can or cannot do. Leggett fully funded the BOE request, for example. The Council would have looked evil to take away any school funding. So the Executive has some influence.

My post really meant Floreen is a better bet for upcounty. All things considered.

I personally voted Ficker as I think we need change, but Floreen is a good choice also. Anyone but Elrich.

As for Ficker's chances as a Republican, in the last CoExec election in 2014, the Republican (Shalleck) got 33% of the vote to Legget's 66%. So if Ficker gets as many as Shalleck, and the Democat vote is split evenly between Elrich and Floreen, then Ficker has a decent chance. However, I think Floreen will scoop up a bunch of both Democrat and Republican voters, so that will bring Ficker's numbers down.

I know this and would like to have a county exec who actually lives upcounty, but I can’t reconcile voting for him. I am not a proponent of bus transit so don’t want to vote Erlich either. I guess that leaves me with Floreen?

True, he's refused campaign contributions from developers (unlike Floreen who is being entirely funded by developers), but he's talked about having smart development moving in parallel with basic infrastructure i.e. not having hideously overcrowded schools and roads, which is our status quo.

I'm voting based on who I think will work the hardest to bring businesses and high paying jobs to the area. I think Floreen will do that more so than Ehrlich. For upcounty district 2 Council Member, Amatteti has my vote.

You make the mistake of believing we care about contributions from “developers”. I didn’t build my house by hand. We need developers. Developers are not a bad thing.

+1. And Elrich's version of "smart development" is essentially no development because his demands (financial and otherwise) make it nearly impossible for any development to occur.

Bethesda Magazine backs up my assessment that Ficker has no chance. The race will be decided by how many cross over to vote for Floreen.
