That is one way to make new friends.

We were very friendly with our neighbors, invited them to our housewarming party, etc

We also are going to our local church but we are only meeting much older people that way

Get a dog and invite other dogs and their parents over to play in your back yard. Provide drinks. It can happen.

What do you like to do, OP? I say look for friends through common interests - sports, an exercise class, etc.

Yeah. Either have kids or move to where more child free people live.

Im curious why you moved to gaithersburg if you don't have kids?

Also if you have a pet, you are likely to get to know your neighbors better. It may not translate into social plans but it is a start of building a network where you are. I know you mentioned synagogue, is there a couples class thru your place of worship?

This. My husband and I moved to the burbs pre-kids and were involved in lots of activities (mainly around social dancing, which was our "thing"). We found new places to go and new people to hang out with through meetup.com--not for the sake of meeting people but for the sake of activities that interested us. The people were a side effect.

Curious about social dancing. I do it with my wife as well and we are in Rockville area. What kind of social dancing?

Key party.

I would not have moved to Gaithersburg if I didn't have kids. Better to live in the city and enjoy amenities, people etc. Everyone who lives out there will have kids and do mainly kid-focused stuff.

Only reason to move would be if either work is out there OR if OP and his wife were planning to have kids shortly.

We're on a bit of an island with our respective friend groups; my friends are fun to hang out with, but most have moved out of the area, and the ones that still live around here we usually only see once every few weeks. Her friends all still live in the city, and we've kind of outgrown them, as they're the kind of type who wants to get blackout drunk every weekend. While we do like to drink and have a good time, we've both kind of moved past that point in our lives.

Anyways, we've been having trouble making friends with other couples in our demographic (early 30's, no kids) in our area. We've looked to other resources, such as meetup/our synagogue, but it seems like there's alot of options for single people, alot of options for people with kids, but nothing for those who are married without kids. Any other ideas how we can meet some new couples?

DH and I found ourselves in a similar situation. Not having children living in the 'burbs how to meet new friends or people. We went camping and found that camping is much more a family activity than originally perceived. We contemplated joining area swim & tennis clubs and found ourselves surrounded by families and not many adult couples. We decided one weekend to set outside our comfort zone and visited a lesser known nudist club in Maryland that was suggested by an acquaintance in a "tongue in cheek" manner. During that visit we encountered people like us, married without children, wanting to socialize with others. Subsequent visits that season lead us to meeting/socializing with people in the "same boat as us" - Adults without children that enjoy social events, sporting activities such as tennis, pickle ball, pool volley ball, a large outdoor pool during summer season, indoor pool during colder weather, a large hot tub for 24/7 socializing. Last year we enjoyed a cruise with fifty people from this club, great fun to vacation on a cruise ship with fifty familiar faces. We found a community that we enjoy outside of our normal routine. We do enjoy to socialize and go out to dinner, events with couples we've befriended that are local.

We have discovered that life exists beyond ones comfort zone. Try it, it may not be for everyone, we have found a community of fun people like ourselves that enjoy this community near Annapolis, our weekend getaway place with year round adult activities; bar crawls, wine tastings, paint parties, game nights, theme dances, pot luck dinners, bbq's, tennis, pickle ball, frisbee golf amongst a host of other activities.

Reach out if you wish more information on this community.

Warm Regards,
