I don't think it is too onerous on businesses. More importantly, it will give DC businesses a competitive advantage in attracting the best employees. Interestingly, Maryland Governor Hogan just yesterday bragged about his new family leave program for state workers: https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/md-politics/in-vote-rich-montgomery-hogan-praises-sweeping-parental-leave-policy-his-administration-once-opposed/2018/09/25/6b133042-c0c3-11e8-be77-516336a26305_story.html
Leaders lead. Silverman led on this issue and others are following. |
So, a few points... one--the leave is for state employees. Not all employees. two-go GOP. This guy has been a dark horse. Presidential material? Cross party appeal? Last, if VA and MD embrace mandated parental leave or all employees in their states and Elissa Silverman THEN wants to match it, that is fair and I would support it. |
|
Probably nobody cares, but I've written an endorsement of Elissa Silverman for DC Council At-Large:

It might attract the best and brightest employees to a job but it won't do anything to incentivize them to move into DC if they can live elsewhere for less. |
Well her opponent just got another vote. |
I'm pretty sure they don't let Colorado residents vote in DC elections. |
| Reeder is dunzo. Her political high and low occurred the moment Bowser took charge of her campaign. |
I really like Dionne. The Mayor did not want to support her even though she is a business owner. The mayor supported the other crazy person who couldn't even get on the ballot. |
True, but now the Mayor supports Reeder. Reeder has gathered as many disgraced former politicians as possible into her campaign. Just about anyone who has ever been arrested or fined for political corruption is supporting her. |
|
I have a hard time supporting Silverman given her treatment of Vince Grey.
I'll probably sit this one out. |
NoVa resident here, but confused by this What do you mean by big box? Walmart? They are not going to leave their new stores in DC, and ones in the suburbs are a long way for most DC shoppers. (and several on those in Arlington and Alexandria are going to give way to development). As for office using firms (start ups, whatever?) DC office market is stronger than the inner suburbs now. Surrounding districts? You mean counties and cities? Alexandria and Arlington cannot make their own labor law or they would be happy to join in. These calls are made by states. Md is probably close on these things. Va will be harder. Still, economic suicide is unlikely. If you are worried about economic suicide, you might want to also look at the unfavorable publicity DC gets when someone like Lopez failed to rebuke an antisemitic speaker, who called CM Silverman a "fake Jew". |
| Silverman tried to work out a compromise on Initiative 77 and I really appreciate that she did that. I don't trust Reeder who will owe everything to Bowser if she gets elected. |
|
As I wrote in the endorsement article to which I linked above, Reeder has rounded up just about every disgraced DC politician she can find to help with her campaign. This includes former Council Member Harry Thomas who stole $300k from children's programs. Today on the Kojo show, she compared these crooks to Nelson Mandela and MLK.
Also on the Kojo Show, Reeder refused to offer an alternative Paid Family Leave plan. She says she opposes the existing plan that Silverman authored, but "doesn't have all the answers" as to how to change it. That's a big tell. The opponents of the existing law don't have a replacement. If they have their way, we will have no paid family leave. Don't let them fool you into believing they have a better plan. They have no plan. |
| Silverman is too left for me but she has way more integrity than Bonds or Reeder who sit in the developers pockets. |
| Reeder will be a mayoral shill. We certainly don't need more of that, given how poorly Bowser has done. |
