Russia the main suspect in causing brain injuries to US diplomats in Cuba and China

This whole thing should strike terror into the hearts of anyone connected to the State department. One of the articles mentioned the sick people weren’t given sick leave and had to go on unpaid leave in the case of those returning from
China. Also mentioned that the state department wasn’t using the correct equipment to measure radiation. These are our front liners in diplomacy and national security. We need to protect them.

I do find this story fascinating and terrifying. How do they choose who to target? They skip the top 4 at the CIA but hit number 5? And one random White House staffer, on two different continents, but not Bolton, with whom she traveled? And an American diplomat's family in both China and -- horrifyingly -- in PA while getting treatment?! Holy f*ck.

Our country seems to be the country that has this technology. Trump will not acknowledge that diplomats are injured in certain countries and many seem to be so damaged they have to retire. I don't put it past him to be directing it against Americans he is targeting. What's a little more treason? It fit his motives that Americans were attacked in Cuba putting an end to a better diplomatic relationship with Cuba.

I had the exact same reactions. This is pure speculation, but maybe they could only hit targets based on opportunity where all the cards lined up - they had detailed location info, the US person didn’t have security, the location was amenable to targeting, or maybe they targeted specific people who knew or were close to finding out specific info that they did not want known or to become public (eg the Fiona Hill Suggestion - no basis for this and I haven’t checked the timeline via a vis the Ukraine whistleblower call and impeachment testimony, but one could imagine generally that with the scope of misdeeds engaged in by this administration with foreign powers, there were certain sensitive secrets that the perpetrators wanted to protect). They’re not just targeting all identifiable personnel in the DC area (I hope), though they did blanket target the embassies in Cuba and China (and Russia post-Cold War through who knows). The targeting of the two people on US soil after they were already hit abroad makes it seem like they were specific targets for knowledge-based reasons.

One of the stories linked in either that GQ article or the similar NYT article that came out yesterday stated that a US scientist developed this tech decades ago, and later went TO RUSSIA to show them the technology (WTF).

Also that some aren’t able to get their agency to refer them for medical treatment or pay for the cost.

Did you read the Julia Iofe/GQ article on page 1? It was published on October 19,2020. The attacks are worse and the Trump administration is covering up the injuries to American diplomats. How is this an old thread?
