My kid is in the magnet at Eastern, taking regular 6th grade IM as the normal extension of elementary compacted math, and I haven't seen any evidence of an "enriched" section. Apparently their math class is packed full of kids who were in their compacted math classes at their CES, so if there is another enriched section out there somewhere, it must be pretty small and exclusive. I didn't see anything about it in the course registration handbooks, but it's not impossible it was offered quietly to individuals and not announced generally. So the class at Takoma never materialized? The school was originally not on the list for the enriched classes, but later they said TKMS would get the humanities (non-math) course. If it's true that it was never actually offered this year, I bet people are royally pissed if they turned down an invite for Eastern in favor of a shorter commute and enriched coursework at the neighborhood school (which we'd considered doing at one point). Talk about bait-and-switch! |
Are you referring to the actual magnet courses? Those are not available to neighborhood kids. Only kids actually admitted into the magnet program can take magnet classes, which makes sense because it's an integrated curriculum so you really have to take all of them. As for the separate accelerated courses, I don't know if those are being offered at Eastern and TPMS for non-magnet kids. They should be. All of our middle schools should have much better offerings for kids who can do the work. Although I have one kid at CES and one at a magnet middle, I think MCPS' model of limiting the spaces available and making it a highly competitive test-in program is so stupid and backwards. There are so many kids who would thrive with more accelerated courses, and especially the integrated curricula of Eastern/TPMS, and lumping every kid who doesn't get into a magnet program into the "average" category (where honors just means grade level) is such a disservice to those kids. |
| I heard the new enriched classes are even better than the magnet versions. |
Details? |
Yes, I'm the one who asked whether accelerated classes will be available at TPMS and Eastern (for non-magnet students) because I feel the same as this PP. |
| Agree - hearing also that the enriched classes are far superior to the magnet programs. We're thrilled so far. |
Oh, have you had a child in the magnet program, and now you have a child in the enriched classes? If not, what is the basis for your comparison? |
| I would be really happy to hear that the enriched classes are so great, but how could anyone possibly know this? It’s only been three days. And particularly with no specifics from the poster, it seems like someone just trying to foment controversy. Let’s not take the bait. |
Pretty sure that both this and the other PP are trolls.
|
I had the same thought! |
| Is there a reading list for the 6th grade enriched humanities class? |
Its day two..what is there to be thrilled about? |
My son is in the math class and said he likes it so far because all of the kids are smart and like math. He is excited about the projects the teacher told him about, which seem to be a cross with computer science, science and real-world application of math. I haven't seen a syllabus or docs, so I dont know if this is true. Beyond that, he hasn't really done anything to make any meaningful assessment or comparison!

| If you don't like the post, just call the person a troll and slap an emoji. That'll show em, and prove you are right! |
Will it lead to 7th grade algebra? |
