Is it true that the middle schools housing magnets (i.e. Eastern and TPMS) will not be offering these accelerated classes?
I believe that is true, because they already have the courses, and their home population can be in those classes.
Are you referring to the actual magnet courses? Those are not available to neighborhood kids. Only kids actually admitted into the magnet program can take magnet classes, which makes sense because it's an integrated curriculum so you really have to take all of them. As for the separate accelerated courses, I don't know if those are being offered at Eastern and TPMS for non-magnet kids. They should be. All of our middle schools should have much better offerings for kids who can do the work. Although I have one kid at CES and one at a magnet middle, I think MCPS' model of limiting the spaces available and making it a highly competitive test-in program is so stupid and backwards. There are so many kids who would thrive with more accelerated courses, and especially the integrated curricula of Eastern/TPMS, and lumping every kid who doesn't get into a magnet program into the "average" category (where honors just means grade level) is such a disservice to those kids.
