The future of the Catholic Church

I think there is a subtle difference. If one says they are "vehemently anti-jewish", that can be interpreted to refer to more than just the jewish dogma. It can refer to individuals of jewish descent.

I am opposed Catholic dogma and teachings, for example those that condemn poor women to be endlessly bearing children, reject homosexuals, etc. I am not a hater of Catholic human beings. It's their beliefs and the application of those beliefs to society as a whole that concern me. I think you know that but you are intentionally ignoring the point.

Also, even in our PC society today, aren't individuals who BELONG to an ethnic group for example, usually given a pass to criticize that group? Like Bill Cosby's criticism of the behavior of some black people?

As someone who spent 20 years being tortured by Catholicism, I feel I've earned my right to bitch.

- OP

Unlike Bill Cosby who can't stop being Black, you have stopped being Catholic. I can't even believe you thought that was a great analogy to make.

You don't agree with the teaching of the Church. Fine. But get your facts straight, will ya.
The church doesn't condemn poor women to endlessly bear children, when you go to for premarital classes you receive information on how to use natural family planning. If you choose to have your tubes tied, guess what? The church doesn't do inquiries or inspections of your reproductive organs.

The Catholic Church is one of the few Christian Churches that don't reject gays and have said that being gay is not a sin.

have never been to a mass where they have polled the congregation on reproductive rights. In fact, everyone I know who has had an abortion is actually Catholic, and they still go to Mass, none of them have been excommunicated.

I am so sick of people like you on this board who think that it's OK to start topics about how they HATE Catholics. Great you spent 20 years "tortured" that doesn't mean everyone raised in the Church is nor does it give you the right to tell others that their beliefs are not OK.

I think you need to just shut the fuck up and keep your opinions to yourself. Especially since your examples about what you think is wrong with the Catholic Church weren't even accurate.

Which church do you attend? Because your statement of beliefs and practices (save the polling and reproductive inspections), as you present them, were NOT the understanding of any Catholic church or school I attended.

Natural family planning? Are you kidding me? Are you seriously suggesting that the rhythym method is an effective birth control option? Or that poor women have a whole lot of say in WHEN they have sex with their husbands because it might not be the wisest time of the month? How do you know what goes on in “premarital classes” in rural Mexico?

The church may have a “don’t ask don’t tell” position on not inspecting one’s reproductive organs at the church door, but that does not change their official teaching that only god gets to decide whether sex between a man and wife makes a baby. Sterilization is not allowed by Church teachings.

The Catholic church doesn’t reject gay people as long as they refrain from actually being gay.
Unless they’ve confessed and been absolved, your abortion having friends are in the greatest state of mortal sin and it’s a terrible offense for them to be receiving communion at Catholic mass.

Sounds like YOU are the one who needs to get your facts straight.

And I REALLY love, "shut the fuck up and keep your opinions to yourself". Wow that really raises the discourse to a sophisticated level.

Wow, I could not disagree with you more!

Natural family planning? Good luck with that. It's why my religion teacher at my Catholic high school sobbed her eyes out for weeks after discovering she was unexpectedly pregnant. She's not the only one. Using any other form of (more reliable or back up) birth control? Sin. Goes against Catholic teachings.

Tubes tied? Sin. Goes against Catholic teachings.

Being gay not a sin? Technically, maybe - but living life as a gay? Sin. Goes against Catholic teachings.

Abortion? Sin, and a big one for the Catholics. One way ticket to hell, isn't it? Definitely goes against Catholic teachings.

You have not described tolerant Catholicism - you have described a slew of people who do not follow Catholic teachings. Your post makes NO sense.

Re: "natural family planning": What do you call a woman who practices natural family planning?

amazing the amount of falsehoods about Catholicism that people are spreading. I suggest the fools here go talk to a priest instead of jumping to assumptions and simply making things up. Having an abortion does not send one straight to hell. Neither does having your tubes tied. There are zillions of sins committed every day as we are all sinners. It is what happens afterwards that is important.

And for the posters who keep complaining "Catholics are being persecuted, and you could never complain about the Jews!" - there is a big difference in what's being said here. I have seen NO debates on the merits of certain beliefs or philosophies of Judaism. Negative posts about Jews/Judaism seem, more generally, to be about hating Jewish people - not specific quibbles with the religion's philosophy, but a dislike for "the Jews" as a whole. The posts about Catholics/Catholicism - these posts have addressed specific components of the belief system that people disagree with. This is not bigotry. This is debate about the merits of specific components of the religion's beliefs.

Wait, wait - so abortion is okay, and birth control is okay, and permanent sterilization is okay? Good to know. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

Oh, it's ALL ok! Up to and including cold-blooded, pre-meditated murder. As long as you confess and repeat and do your penance. But you have to really mean it, now! And promise never, ever to do it again. Or at least to try to not do it again. But we're all weak, and God understands. That's why confession is on Saturdays, so you can get Friday off your conscience before Mass on Sunday.

That is, confess and repent. Typo. I'm off to say some Hail Marys for my offense.

Don't be daft. Confession is for those who truly wish to repent for their sins not to wipe the slate clean.

I take it you are defending Catholicism because you are Catholic?

How nice of you to model the behavior of Jesus in your behavior towards others. You are a shining example of Christianity.

Oh dear. Jewish mom here. I am a bitter, judgmental person about just about everything else, but religion and, to some extent, politics are matters of personal conscience to me. I think it's completely inappropriate to bash some one else's religion, even anonymously. Seriously-- what does it give you to do this? You don't like Catholic doctrine, don't be Catholic. That's where it needs to end.
