Southern schools

I haven’t really spent time in the south before, so this may be normal there, but it rubbed me the wrong way.

You do realize that DC is still racially segregated in so many respects due to racism, right?

Interesting take. How so?

Oh, please. New Yorkers look down their nose at everyone. If we weren't "southern," we'd be something else.

Jeez. Sensitive much? Why not hear what someone has to say first? Not every New Yorker looks down on you. Now I think I’m more interested in how you came to feel so persecuted. Quick, before it becomes another UVA thread!

UVa is a very southern school...

With “diversity” from all regions of Long Island and Nee Jersey.

It’s different here. My kids are white, but they have classmates and teachers who are black, Hispanic, Asian, Indian, etc.

But DC as a whole remains sadly segregated due to racism and classism.

It’s especially bad here.

Wondering about the defensiveness/insecurity in the south? NP here. Also, agree. DC is very southern to some people. So what?

If you guys think DC is the South you might want to consider spending a few days down in the real south.... the OP wanted to know about Clemson and UGA. These schools are nothing like say Maryland and VA where it attracts lots of people from other parts of the country including the NE and the mid Atlantic states..... Clemson and the area around Clemson is very southerner....Athens is much more liberal and tends to pulls lots of kids from the Atlanta area whose parents relocated from other parts of the country. Clemson might be a little more of a culture shock vs say UGA.

OK, I'll bite. In what way does racism prevent anybody from buying whatever house they'd like, wherever they'd like?

From southern Cali, DMV is like Georgia.

My DS will not go any further south than UVA. Most of his choices are northeast and midwest. But we're New Englanders at heart.

From DMV, southern Cali is vacuous and self-absorbed.

What!? I am not even interested in the bulk of this thread but you are clueless.
Directly- If a buyer doesn’t want to sell his house to a family of a certain race or for any other personal reason, they can get away with it. If a builder doesn’t want to sell to someone, they can get around that deal too. This is hard to prove. And who wants to enter into a transaction with someone s who doesn’t want me,

Indirectly - If someone or their kid is treated hostile, or being threatened, abused, tortured, harassed, etc they couldn’t comfortably/safely livewhere they were clearly not wanted.

I don’t have this problem. I live in an area where my house is really overpriced, but I can easily afford it and it’s convenient to my job and my town/neighbors is progressive and welcoming. But if you think that every race can just live, work, shop, eat, where ever they want if the majority doesn’t want them to you have a lot to learn.
