DD put my little ponies in a brand new container of hummus today

Anonymous
I took my kids out to breakfast today as a special treat, and my 5yo dd dropped a whole piece of bacon on the floor. I ate it. I have no shame.

I was going to say the same — having had to count pennies before, learning to cook more items really helps and hummus is a great recipe to master because it is both more delicious and way cheaper if you make it yourself. Good luck!

Don't be so hard on yourself, op. Definitely hug your daughter.

If you weren't so stressed out, you would find my little ponies in humus funny, so I hope one day soon you can look back and laugh at this. Hang in there.

Not OP but in similar financial straits, don’t you need a blender or food processor to make hummus?

No, you can make it with a hand masher, or even a fork, as they did in the days before electricity, but of course it takes longer.

does pg county have free lunch sites for the summer? in dc all kids can have free lunch through the summer. you just have to show up at the schools doing the food. maybe that can take the edge off a little for you right now.

You can still eat the hummus - I definitely would.

I would eat the ponied hummus!

Sorry for what you're going through, OP.

Yes. They are serving both breakfast and lunch for kids, for free, and you don't need to show id. Just show up. Parents can't eat though.

OP, how old is your daughter?

I'm thinking you are going through a lot of feelings because you are worried about money and flipped out on your daughter when in the past you would have just laughed it off. But now you realize how tight things are going to be and you are worried (and maybe feel guilty) about the effect this stress is going to have on your daughter.

Apologize to her for flipping out and just explain matter of factly that money is tight right now. You will always have enough to eat but you cannot afford to waste food. Lots of people grew up with that mentality, even if they had a lot of money, and it won't hurt her to learn that she needs to be careful with her possessions and with food.

It costs more to buy those items separately than to buy a container of hummus. Sure, you can use them for other stuff, but when the idea is to reduce what you spent at the store today, it's not helpful.

This will definitely be a funny story you tell you daughter someday but I know it is not funny right now. Eat the hummus. Give your self a break. Good luck in getting through this rough spot.

It’s cheaper because you get a lot more hummus.

This is only true if you don’t have a processor (or blender) or don’t have olive oil. Otherwise even the ingredients are cheaper. Hummus at the store is stupid expensive.

Which is why it’s one of those things that makes me feel good/like I’m not deprived even when I’m broke. The other thing is gravlax, which can also be made insanely cheaply as long as you have time, a fridge, and a very sharp knife.
