Why is that? What were the police doing before? Or were more officers hired to deal with the issues? Great - but this is yet another cost of illegal immigration for county residents to bear.

Yes, the County Executive and County Council added new positions to both the police department and the state's attorney's office back in the fall to crack down on gang issues.

Most gang members are born here, or are here legally. It's not all illegal immigrants. Remember, MS13 was created here in the US.

Victims are afraid to call the police for fear of deportation or deportation of family members hence crime rises.

All can leave. All

So can you.

Yes, but there is no evidence of foul play there yet. The body is in Baltimore for an autopsy. But it could have been something like that rare type of heart attack young people have. He apparently played basketball there at the school quite often.

Hopefully no foul play! Thanks for the extra info.

I wanted to share the facts but didn't want to hurt the reputation of this community for no reason

You can follow this website for updates. And the police department does a good job updating its facebook page.

I read the crime reports weekly and other than assorted assaults (which tend to happen late at night), most of the crimes tend to be car or home break-ins. I'm not afraid in my home or when I go out. I'm much more afraid of being robbed when I go into DC.

Most gang violence in Montgomery County is against el Salvadorans. If you are not el Salvadoran or buying drugs from them, you are pretty darn safe.

But innocent El Salvadorans are being preyed on daily. Extorted, stolen from, threatened, etc.

Like back in El Salvador but now we’re paying for crime enforcement and seeing it all here? Not good.
And no one is ‘safe’ when there are bullets flying around the neighborhood .

What we should be doing is working to stabilize things in these other countries. It spreads to the US so maybe residents will understand why we need a presence in other countries.

Unfortunately, in recent history the U.S. presence in Central America has been a force for destabilization. We don't have a very good track record in that department.

Yes, they confirmed no foul play

Anyway, I think stuff like this just feeds anti immigration attitudes and quite fairly so

the recent history??? Ok, if recent means 50 years ago,...

I think if central Americans may pass through safer Mexico and apply for "asylum" from gang violence here, then US citizens from Baltimore and Chicago should be able to head to Canada and make the same claim with them. Ultimately, we need to shore up our own violent, deprived zones, and Central Americans need to work on theirs. Happy to have the US help with that effort, including more strict guest worker programs (no families) with remittances, advisors etc. But if everyone can pick up and seek asylum due to violence and lack of economic opportunity then I would exhort folks from some neighborhoods in DC to head straight to Toronto and take advantage of their generous resettlement programs.

By Central Americans and anchors etc. So you blame the USA? How many millions or billions in aid have we poured into those countries? MS13 has been a problem in the DC area for over a decade. It's not PC to talk about it. Note Obama was our president for 8 years and MS13 ignored that as well as Trump, Bush, who ever. Crimes got and get reported. Connelly lobbied for money in about 2005 and so did Eleanor Holmes Norton.

Long Island got some extra gang enforcement money recently but our politicians have been asking for squat or we'd have read about at least some new federal help. NY area isn't exactly flush with Republicans so why haven't our politicians been barking for more money even for all the unaccompanied minors? Ridiculous that local taxpayers have to bear the financial costs of federal policy. Some politicians act like identity theft isn't even a real crime.

I used to live in MV and was thinking of moving back - everyone I spoke with said NO. It is not the same place.

I'd like to know what exactly that means. If there are two crimes in 2017 and then four crimes in 2018, wow, crime has gone up 100%! How are they measuring this, which crimes are selected as being considered "gang" related, How do they know it's gang related for sure? Are they going by convictions or just arrests? etc. etc.

But yeah if the immigrant population is afraid of law enforcement, they are ripe for victimization, no doubt.

Actually Obama and Rod Rosenstein did NOT ignore it. Rosenstein did a lot to tamp down on Maryland gang activity and it fell really low. Lots of federal grant money given. Lots of work done by his office on joint federal state local gang task forces. Gang activity has picked up again and the county is dealing with it. I’m not seeing much help from the feds these days.
