how are any of those racist? |
"Take that bone out of your nose?" Do you think the caller actually had a bone in her nose? Was the bone making it hard for her to speak clearly, and thus Rush was just trying to undertstand the caller? Or perhaps Rush was able to determine by the tone of her voice that she is not really African in ancestry but a member of the Papuan Asmat tribe and thus, he was recognizing and celebrating her heritage. Yes, celebrating. That must be it. Go with that. You must be one of those people who is so colorblind, you didn't even see how "nose bone" could be interpreted in a bad way. I guess your extensive field work in anthropology makes such a statement commonplace. |
Try this. I think it is hilarious. This is from a Libertarian website but I first took notice of it by way of the National Review.

20 years on the radio and the best you can come up with is about a bone in the nose? haha. mocking and funny, yes. racist? ummm, no. I can find 1000x more racist comments any morning on the drivetime radio show on any of the urban/rap stations .... |
I didn't say it was the best. It is definitely racist. Racism is taking the position that a given race is inferior. Racist humor uses stereotypes of the race to illustrate that perceived inferiority. A bone in the nose is a stereotype meant to associate black skin with being a primitive. You finding it funny does not make it less racist. And I don't see how a comparison with drivetime radio helps you. It only invites comparison with Imus and the "Nappy headed hoes" comment. Imus himself said it was wrong, and I don't see how it is substantially different from "nose bone". I think you should seriously examine your own attitudes. |
I am white, so I freely admit I may not be as sensitive to some things as my African-american friends since that is not my experience. However, when I heard the bone in the nose comment, my first impression was not racial, it was Neanderthal/Caveman in nature. It was meant to be insulting, that was clear, but that is the nature of talk radio interactions too many times. I don't know what Limbaugh intended, no one does, but I do believe there are alternative thought processes that go in a totally different direction. |
it is funny that I am defending Limbaugh, since really I can't stand him - but fair is fair and unfair is unfair. You could EASILY find thousands of his quotes where he tells his listeners his views on race: is is the standard color-blind MLK vision that Reagan shared. Everyone judged by the content of their character and not the color of their skin. On the other hand, you have to REALLY reach to find anything racist that he has said on-air, and I think that reaching is exactly what the PP is doing. Does he hate welfare and other govt enginereered social programs? Yes. Because he is a racist? I don't think so - More likely because he doesn't think they work, are too expensive, and are in the long run really are hurting the black community. |
There is not enough context provided with that particular quote to fully evaluate it. However, the link between "bone in the nose" and racist stereotypes of black people is very strong. Just look at Obama's nose in this well-known picture: ![]() |
You mean you think he would have said this to an Irish guy? |
how is that racist? is it putting down his kenyan roots because he is black or just making a caricature of it? his dad was kenyan. speaking of irish, Reagan & Kennedy were often drawn in political cartoons as fighting irishmen. big deal. the witch doctor thing is great ... |
Are you serious? There is nothing in that photo that is accurate of Kenyan dress. It's akin to "caricaturing" a Jewish politician by drawing a huge nose, a purse full of gold coins, and drinking non-Jewish blood. |
what do kenyan witchdoctors look like then? i have no idea. on tv i saw some kenyan tribal people who were killing lions unlawfully, and they were not wearing western clothes (nor should they, they live in Kenya!). |
http://www.fhi.org/en/CountryProfiles/Kenya/res_nyukenyaart.htm The above link should take you to a picture of 100 Kenyan doctors. The funny thing about the picture is that not one doctor depicts your stereotype of a Kenyan doctor. Funny how that could happen. Duh |
not kenyan medical doctors, duh! traditional kenyan dress ... |
