I drive white knuckled in the middle lane when crossing the bridge and that's only if I have to.

Yup me too.

This is me, in tunnels, like Ft McHenry. I hate tunnels but do it anyway.

Agreed. Otherwise you have to drive all the way up to Delware and then come down the peninsula, which will make the drive much longer.

Should note it’s not the actual bridge staff that does it, it’s a for-pay service through a private company, I think it costs $30.

Wow, learn something new every day. Is this a service specifically for people who feel uncomfortable driving on the bridge? Never heard of that before, here or anywhere else.

My senior citizen mom has the bridge staff drive her car (she said it was the NJ state police, not sure though) across the Del Mem bridge a few years ago.

The state police will drive it over the Bay Bridge too. No need to pay someone to do it.

I drove once over it in the dark, though...and it was SO SO SO much better; it didi'nt phase me at all. (my issue is, i think, being able to see how long and twisty it is) If that is at all possible for you, I would highly recommend it.

I read somewhere it's one of the worst, for some reason. The way it's constructed and the way you end up viewing things.

The Bay Bridge is consistently ranked as one of the more terrifying bridges to drive across. That damn turn! And I hate when you have to drive on the "wrong" side and traffic going to the other way is right next to you.

I used to have to drive across the Mackinac Straights Bridge all.the time and that was a cakewalk compared to the Chesapeake.

We had to do this several years ago when the bay bridge was closed for several days because of a, um, major truck accident. It was a nice route for a change. No big deal.

You could drive up to Delaware and come back down. You would still have to cross a couple of bridges and tunnels, including the Tidings.

I hate that bridge and now know why and am definitely not alone.

They ended the free service years ago. Now, there's a private company on hand and you can pay to have someone drive you over. That is a freaking terrifying bridge but I've made it over when I had to.

I’m new to area and had to go through Williamsburg to Jamesville Va and the Chesapeake Bridge/Tunnel was THE most terrifying drive. Messed up and Googled it later after reaching destination. It’s long, narrow, and flat. I think it’s 20+ miles and ranked as one of the longest in the US. Got there and swore I was stuck because I was not mentally able to drive over to get back. So decided to go north and around to get home, and then encountered the Bay Bridge. I had been hearing about this is traffic reports but never realized it was as massive. I convinced myself it was better, maybe because it was wider; but the height and curves are scary. This was a Sunday morning, and cannot imagine having to drive that daily or in more traffic, especially with the lanes change.
