| What makes this school so much better than Va Tech for the money? |
A student who wants to be in a big city for internships, networking, recreation etc. would probably be better suited to Atlanta vs. Blacksburg... |
| Ga Tech is smaller than Va Tech by about 12,000 undergraduates and has far stronger engineering programs than Va Tech. |
| OOS kids who study abroad pay instate tuition |
If you are in FCPS, you can go to your HS's career counselor and they can look up the county wide GATech stats for you. There should be enough to see a pattern. |
What type of math and science classes? |
But also know that undergrads are not the focus here (graduates students are). A great school and reputation, with a very imbalanced gender ratio in the engineering disciplines. |
Can you name an engineering school that does not have this problem? |
Same. The kid I know was near perfect in his test scores, greater than 4.0, worked during HS, and a scholar athlete. His stats exceed prior year admit stats. He didn't get in. |
Less of an issue when a good engineering program is embedded in a more comprehensive university (Michigan/Wisconsin/UMD/Illinois). Of course the engineering dept will still have gender imbalance, but then so will the english dept. |

GA tech is in a sketchy area of Atlanta. The campus has it’s fair share of crime, and off campus is worse.

| One of the best eng schools in the country. Tough though so be ready to hit the book. |
+1. I would say it's no 1 for aerospace engineering. It's very tough to get into that program although DS did. Lots of super sharp international engineering students there too. Act 36; GPA 4.4; national awards. |
I don’t understand anecdotes like this. There is more to,admissions than grades/scores. Do we know anything about ithese students recommendations or essays? |
What do you mean by undergraduates are not the focus here? Where is here? This thread or GA Tech? If you are referring to the thread, the question was about undergrad applications. If you are referring to GT, yes, they have fantastic graduate engineering and science programs, but they are also very solid at the undergraduate level and many undergrads stick around or return for masters degrees or PhDs. If Atlanta lands Amazon's HQ2, it will largely be due to GT and the workforce they have developed. As someone else pointed out, the school skews heavily towards engineering which has meant historically fewer women then men (and any visit to campus will confirm this), but that is changing as the State has been broadening the schools curriculum and putting a lot of resources into business and liberal arts programs. It is very difficult to get into these days - far more difficult than 20 - 25 years ago due to the Hope Scholarship keeping a lot of kids in state. |
