Principals: Hiring and Leaving?

Best policy is to ask, but don't be offended if you don't get the answer you are looking for. Imagine for a minute you were being asked these kinds of questions at your job. How would you feel and react?

Many teachers also feel retaliation. I know I wouldn't quit until after my IMPACT score was finalized and after I had to work with my principal. Things tend to go downhill when they know you're leaving.

Yep. I'm the teacher from before. Two months ago, I told my principal that I was CONSIDERING leaving because I'm barely scraping by on my salary. I told him that it was a courtesy just in case I found something and they called for a recommendation. They've already interviewed a replacement for me and told her that she'd be starting next year. One of the central office folks who frequents our school also pulled me aside to say how shocked they were to hear that I'm leaving. I wish I hadn't said anything.

When are the job fairs, haven't seen anything posted yet this year? Seems like lots of unknowns in general with lots of the architects of Ed Reform now gone: Henderson, Kamras, Pick and others.

But isn't it different for principals? I thought central office usually wanted them out or announced asap to get new principals. The competition is pretty fierce for good ones. I couldn't imagine anyone from outside DC wanting to come into a system with no chancellor or deputy mayor for education.

Principal Pritchard at Whittier is moving to Excel Academy as they transition from a charter to DCPS. The assistant principal, who has been there for six years, will be interim principal. We'll miss Principal Pritchard but we aren't afraid of a loss of stability or anything.

Glad they are putting someone competent in that position, seems like she will be a good fit!

Kamras and Davis left months ago. Hadn’t heard yet about Pick. Where is he heading?

Oh wow, that's a good move for her. She was really nice and honest when I met her at meeting held at Whittier.

At our school teacher are forbidden to tel parents that they are leaving. this cannot be discussed until the principal makes the announcement. Does anyone else find that weird and inappropriate?

Lamb is looking for a principal and executive director. I’m sure the board will screw this up too.

Eh, it's not a terrible idea. But it does make it super awkward when parents outright ask. On the other hand it's nice to have that excuse to deflect any questions.

Teachers would end up lying all the time... this sets up bad vibe.
