People who went to college at least 10 years ago: what was your profile and where did you get in?

Graduated in 2006. International from developing country, almost perfect grades from public magnet HS (TJ like), 1520 SAT, ESL. High school didn't rank. For extra curriculum activities I had to work to support myself. Admitted into almost all the schools I applied, including Yale, Brown, and Columbia. Rejected only from Pomona and Harvard.

Graduated in '94. I don't think my school ranked kids past the top two kids. Went to SUNY Cobleskill, and failed out in one semester. It was WAY too hard. Ultimately went to and graduated from community college with a 2 year degree.

I think my SAT's were somewhere in the 700's?

Private girls' high school in DC class of 1993.

I was barely in the top 1/2 of my class, SAT 1100. GPA was 3.3, I believe. Got into Georgetown. Would never get in now.

Out of curiosity - what do you do now?

Class of 1993 here. Public high school in NC. My SATs were embarrassingly low and I think I was in the top 11% of my class, but I had a decent GPA, lettered in 3 sports, had 18 AP credits, and had an interesting/unusual childhood and background.

I was admitted to the 4 schools I applied to- UNC-Chapel Hill, NC State, Villanova, and Notre Dame (which I chose). Not a shot in hell I'd get in today.

I've been a legal secretary since I was 20. It turns out you don't need to know much math in life at all unless you work in math or science.

I graduated from a LCPS in 2000 in the top of my class with an honors diploma (do they still do those there?) and I went to an Ivy from 2000-2004.

I graduated with a 4.0. I do not think they were weighted back then. No clue about that. There was a 3-way tie for #1 and a gladly bowed out to the other two and just took wearing the special sash and cords because I loathed public speaking
I was in all honors classes except for the normal PE/Health classes. My electives were (2 each year) Art, Psychology, Accounting, Computer Science (I struggled so hard in this to keep an A in this & was so glad when it was over), Public Speaking (to try to get over my fear, but it was a joke of a class), and Etymology.
SAT was 1510 (PSAT was actually higher at 1570 but my counselors advised me against taking SAT again after getting 1510).
Never took the SATII.
Never took the ACT.
Took AP Calc AB/BC (3, 4), AP Bio (5), AP Chem (4), AP World History (4), AP Lit (5), AP US History (5), AP Physics (4 I think), AP French (4 I think).
I was part of the Science club, French club, Key club, and NHS. I never held any positions in any clubs. Was never part of any Student Gov.
I didn't play any sports, not even outside of school past the elementary years.
I didn't have any internships/job experience.
I did go on a French excursion trip to Paris with my AP class summer before my senior year.
I did not have any secondary language teachings outside of school.
My volunteer hours came from the local animal shelter and from local marathons/races.
I played no instruments past the middle school years when either band/guitar/chorus was required. I only picked band back then because I can't carry a tune and I have small hands, so the guitar teacher gently suggested it wasn't for me the night the 5th graders were invited to the middle school to test out instruments.

I 100% believe I would NOT get in now with my stats. There's nothing special about me academically. The only thing that was special about me back then was my SAT and that's what got me into the Ivy, I believe. My peers, who were tied with me for #1 in the class, did not have the high SAT score I did and did not get into an Ivy. One went to UVA and the other to UC Berkeley. Also, according to my counselor, what helped in my favor was that I was first generation in my family to go to college and I had one parent who didn't even have a HS education. I am white, though, if that matters. He said that college look at someone who was able to excel in all honors and AP classes and get a high SAT with no home support for homework/studying help in a more favorable light. At least that was back in 99/00 when I was applying.

Early 80's public high school in NJ. Ranked #3 in the class, SATs 1400. Can't remember subject scores or GPA. Debate, creative writing, choir.

Got into Brown (off the waitlist). Probably helped that I didn't need financial aid. Not a snowball's chance in hell nowadays.

Graduated HS 1982.
1320 on the SAT's.
Accepted at Wellesley early decision.

My sister's SAT's were somewhere in the 1100's and she went to Vanderbilt.

no way either of those things are happening today!

Graduated 1992. White female from rural NC and a terrible HS.

1460 SAT
4.0 UW GPA with hardest class load at my HS
2 AP (all that were offered)

NM Finalist and scholarship winner and valedictorian

All conference in a sport, year book editor, and a zillion other extracurriculars. .

Applied to and was admitted to Duke (no scholarship), UNC (Moreheas), Wake Forest (full ride), Davidson (tuition). When I applied, there was no doubt in my mind I would be accepted.

My DC has a much harder academic load, and SATs above 1500. Would be lucky to get into any of the schools I applied to (UNC would be OOS for him).

Graduated from Big 3 in the mid 90s.

Don't remember exact stats but I was around 15-20th in a class of 100. Average EC's - a few sports where I was decent but not a star, on the newspaper staff. SAT was either 1420 or 1480 out of 1600 - don't remember. Good AP scores - took 4 AP classes senior year and got 5's on all.

Rejected from Yale and Amherst. Accepted to Penn, Haverford, Swarthmore, Trinity.

Went to Penn. The idea of me (and most of my friends from there) getting in now is laughable.

My dad was a B/C student in the 70's and got into/attended Ga. Tech.

Penn was definitely not very hard to get into in the early 90's.
I got in as did several of my friends. We were from Pennsylvania and went to a school with no APs and no academic reputation. Being reasonably smart and an SAT >1250 or 1300 got you in with a little luck.

Light years different today.

Very similar to me. Went to top NYC private, equivalent to Sidwell. I think my SAT was 1420.no class rankings or GPAs in my school but I was probably 20-30th in my class. A minus average, only one AP (I thought they were only for college credit, had no idea how much they played in admissions) Also average ECs and was on yearbook staff. Rejected from Yale, Princeton and Williams. Went to Bowdoin. All my college friends say there is no way we would have gotten in today.
