People who went to college at least 10 years ago: what was your profile and where did you get in?

Anonymous
Class of '88. FCPS. Huge secondary school with grad class of over 900!

AP English and Government classes senior year only.

Solid B student. Student leader, no sports. Kind of a partier.

SATs were low maybe a 1100 although guidance counselor told me that had my math score been closer to verbal, it would have jettisoned me to a different league.

Rejected:

JMU
Mary Wash

Accepted at my mom's tiny alma mater in middle of nowhere.

Don't remember exact stats but I was around 15-20th in a class of 100. Average EC's - a few sports where I was decent but not a star, on the newspaper staff. SAT was either 1420 or 1480 out of 1600 - don't remember. Good AP scores - took 4 AP classes senior year and got 5's on all.

Rejected from Yale and Amherst. Accepted to Penn, Haverford, Swarthmore, Trinity.

Went to Penn. The idea of me (and most of my friends from there) getting in now is laughable.

Very similar to me. Went to top NYC private, equivalent to Sidwell. I think my SAT was 1420.no class rankings or GPAs in my school but I was probably 20-30th in my class. A minus average, only one AP (I thought they were only for college credit, had no idea how much they played in admissions) Also average ECs and was on yearbook staff. Rejected from Yale, Princeton and Williams. Went to Bowdoin. All my college friends say there is no way we would have gotten in today.

PP you're responding to - I was also rejected from Princeton, forgot about that. Had a bunch of friends who went to Bowdoin.

My husband was a totally average HS student and went to a big state U in the south. Average grades there. Doing very well in DC area today.

White female, Catholic HS in Chicago
HS class of '95
3.8 GPA I think
31 ACT
played varsity soccer and tennis, and that was it.

Applied to BC, ND, Marquette and Georgetown; got into all of them. Went to ND. No way I'd get in today.

Threads like these are simply excuses for posters to trot out their decades old stats that no one IRL cares one iota about. The PPs miss talking about themselves in this way, so they’re thrilled to join an anonymous brag thread.

I think my SAT's were somewhere in the 700's?

Out of curiosity - what do you do now?

I've been a legal secretary since I was 20. It turns out you don't need to know much math in life at all unless you work in math or science.

So true!

I find it really interesting, actually. Its a LOT more interesting than "what did you cook for Easter?" or "what pants should I wear with these shoes?" or "how do you handle your kid's anxiety?"

Huh? i don't see anyone bragging about their stats. A whole lot of "i would never get in today with these stats".

Early '80s.
Large, well regarded public high school, top 10 in class with over a 4.0.
National Merit Scholar but don't remember exact SAT score.
Symphonic band, varsity wrestling and Spanish club. Spent about a year (off and on) living abroad in Australia so activities were not consistent.

Accepted:
Princeton
Rice
US Coast Guard Academy
Macalester
Berkeley
Minnesota

Attended Minnesota and graduated in 2.5 years after failing the Coast Guard eye exam. Most likely would have gotten in everywhere except maybe Princeton today.

This. I don't remember my GPA, but I didn't have all A's by any means. I got a good score on the English part of SAT and terrible on the math. I transferred from a New England state university to University of Chicago in my sophomore year. Clearly I could never get in now!

I remember my SAT (720V 780M) but have no idea what my GPA was. Certainly wasn't weighted. Took AP Lit exam and scored a 5

HS Class of 1980; Boston U grad 1984, 1986

Dayum, I was in college over 10 years ago. Oof. 2002-2006.

I had a 4.0 from an open-optional alternative school in a low-population state, including an AP class I had to take at a different high school and a class at the local university. 32 ACT. 14something on the SAT, I don't remember. No sports. Very involved in local youth activist groups and state-level politics. A continuous summer and winter-break job; etc.

The "impressive" schools I got into were Swarthmore, Claremont McKenna, Carleton, and I'm not sure if it counts but also Macalester. Got into my home state U without even applying since I was in the top 10% of my class (which, in my case, was 3 ppl). Got a big scholarship at CMC -- I would have had to pay about 6K a year -- and turned it down for a less prestigious college not listed.

1980. 990 on SAT and a 78 average. I worked during HS the whole time and school not a priority due to money issues at home.

Stony Brook let me in as a HEOP student! 100 percent financial aid, tuition, room and board.

I laugh today when folks tell me Stony Brook is hard to get into. It actually is now.

33ACT + SAT II subject tests, incl 800 on writing

Went to BU on full ride over BC, Georgetown. Rejected from Duke and Stanford.

The thing is, if I had gone to school in a more pressured time, I quite possibly would have risen to the occasion.

Things are very distorted these days. There are still only so many kids chasing so many slots. Not as much change as we all seem to think.

Last 10 years doesn't include the 90s or 80s folks!
