My colleague smells like feces

Just politely say...

NP. Are colostomy bags really that common? I thought of it as a pretty rare thing.
Anonymous
They’re not that rare and it’s also not usual that they smell.

Source: had one.

This. A family member has one and I haven't smelled feces on them.

There are about 75,000 - 100,000 ostomy procedures in the US per year.

Is that what that is? I always thought it was denture breath.

Wow. That's actually a lot. Is that number increasing over time? I feel like they would be a lot more common if this had been done for the past couple of decades. It's usually a one-way procedure, right?

Sometimes ostomies (ileostomy, colostomy, and others) are temporary to let other sites heal before they are reversed. Sometimes they are more permanent. It depends.

No, they get reversed often. Sometimes crohn’s (another possible source of odor) causes so much inflammation that you need to rest the bowels with a bag.

I think with the rates of things like Chron’s skyrocketing, Americans will be smelling a lot more colostomy bags in the future.

Yes, the bacteria smells like suplhuric mothballs and poop. Can clear out a room when it’s bad. The other day I was in the same grocery aisle as someone and could smell it.

I think this is the likely culprit if they appear otherwise clean and kempt. Much more likely than a stomy bag, a very close and elderly relative has one and I’ve never noticed an odor.

Indeed it smells awful, (as does a festering infection), but nothing at all like poop.

.

I work with colostomies daily. A lot of the smell depends on where it is as well as the diet of the person. And the GI makeup of a person. I've had many patients where the smell is neglible. I've also had many that permeate the entire hallway of the hospital when they are emptied and the scent lingers on them.

Ostomies aren't "common" but they are common enough that it's a possible reason.

Granted, the person could have continence issues or just plain poor hygiene.

But colostomy bag sounds reasonable.

Mean, and IMO untrue, every fat person I know id hyper aware of their size and does everything imaginable to NOT smell.
