Talking to husband about his all American diet

Half Indian here. Indian food isn't necessarily healthiers. Lots of fried foods, and many of the curries are made with ghee (clarified butter). There are healthier options too.. just like there are healthier American food options.

+1. Agree with the poster who said that the OP married Tony Soprano and his eating habits (a lot of Americans in my town didn't even try lasagna until their 20s...) and assumes that's all Americans.

Uhm Indian food is not healthy. Tons of ghee, fried breads and the sweets are filled with sugar. With growing wealth India is actually facing a growing obesity problem as their people are able to indulge in more of these foods. Get a grip on yourself OP.

Not OP, but it can be healthy, just like American food can be healthy. Indian restaurant food is not typical of homemade Indian food.

OP, interestingly, most of the Indian women I know who are my age are overweight. They all cook and eat Indian food "from scratch." So you might need to change the thrust of your argument when bringing this up to your husband. Indian culture/approach to activity and food seems to have changed too: it isn't just an American thing.

Maybe you could leave out the culture references and just talk about wanting to eat healthier as a family.

Empty carbs and meat? No vegetable? No, it's not healthier than traditional Indian (ie, not the greasy, salty crap you may get when you eat out).

OP, what does your DH eat now? What foods does he like? Do both of you cook?

We are a nation of 400million people from various backgrounds...even the white people. Yes, shocking.

I can only speak from my perspective. My parents were, and still are old hippies. I grew up vegetarian. Everything was home cooked. Lots of tofu, nutritional yeast, oat bran, lentils, granola, nuts, and loads of vegetables.

I now eat fish, chicken, and some pork.

I live in Ashburn...an Indian Mecca. Over the years I've been invited to countless Diwali parties and to neighbors house for dinner cooked from scratch. I've always left so full of carbs and grease. If I ate that food in a daily basis, if have a man sized gut. I love the food, but But OMG, I don't need diabetes!
