No words to express how silly it is for privileged Asians (and whites) to cry foul on stuff like this. Plenty of schools out there and if your kid doesn't get into one, they will surely get into another. You are not helping your kids out by telling them they are not getting into X school because they are being discriminated against for being Asian/white/black/Hispanic/whatever. College admissions are a crapshoot and you can't always get what you want. Parents just can't fix everything for their kids.

Why is this answer not the same if you are not Asian, white or privileged?

BINGO!

(the real answer, of course, are the 2-lawyer black couples who want to protect the AA privilege for their kids)

Well, when the system is already gamed against Asians, you do what you can.

I would think most people would prefer a meritocracy, but absent that they would prefer to be among the advantaged. To find yourself discriminated against wouldn’t feel good to anybody with half a brain. Until you’re in that position why don’t you keep your opinion to yourself.

Asian Americans have the highest SAT averages, AP scores, dominate class rankings but we have the lowest elite college acceptances.

Here is results of research from one of many articles:

The study found that, without affirmative action, the acceptance rate for African-American candidates at elite colleges would be likely to fall by nearly two-thirds, from 33.7 percent to 12.2 percent, while the acceptance rate for Hispanic applicants probably would be cut in half, from 26.8 percent to 12.9 percent.

White applicants would have seen little change in this analysis. Their admission rate would rise slightly, to 24.3 percent, from 23.8 percent.

The big gains would be for Asian applicants. Their admission rate in a race-neutral system would go to 23.4 percent, from 17.6 percent. And their share of a class of admitted students would rise to 31.5 percent, from 23.7 percent.

check black - no one can assert what your race is. it is self identity.

+1.

Sounds stupid, but perhaps this is actually the best defense against racial discrimination?

I don't believe universities have special admin groups to verify students' race/ ethnic groups...but who knows? Maybe they infiltrate drinking parties to know who goes where?

Not specific to you, but My only concern is parents instilling in kids that it’s okay to lie if you think something is unfair and you are getting the short end of it.

What's wrong with it? Is it OK for the establishment to screw you over? It IS OK to teach your children that it's OK to lie in the face of injustice.

Using phrases like "drinking parties" will make it pretty obvious.

I don't think they should be able to ask your gender or race. It shouldn't matter. I also hate that some had LGBT boxes. Is that just so they could say they have so much diversity on campus, including LGBT. That shouldn't matter at all in admissions. Roommate selections would come later and that could be included then, not on an admissions application.

Either decline to report race or select bi-racial (Asian/white). My children are also bi-racial (African-American and white) and like a pp that some would see them as black, and some as biracial. My daughters would identify themselves as bi-racial and that is on all their high school applications. Their truth is they have some economic advantages due to their parents but they will also face some challenges whether it be due to sexism or racism.

These days everything is more competitive, high schools, colleges etc. that trying to figure out what advantage someone had that you didn’t is wasted energy that isn’t moving forward. We are focusing on race as being an alleged benefit but being male applying to a school that is tilted toward female, applying to a mid-west school when you are east coast, having connected family, having an underrepresented major, first generation college, winning a major academic or athletic competition, the list goes on. And even if you think you have an edge, there could be another 100 kids with the exact same edge and the school is only going to take x number. I try to emphasize with my kids to put in the work so you can have more options but realize there is more than one path that leads to the same place. There isn’t one high school that is going to guarantee a certain top college.

Legally you can be black on inside and white on outside. Check what you want

Check which race dc identifies with. If dc is hanging out with all Asians check Asian. If you are a tiger mom check Asian. If Dc attends TJ check Asian. If none of these apply to DC. check white.

Rachel Dolezal has opened the door for all of us...lol. If I were Asian I sure as heck would not identify as such on my application.

Threads like this confirm to me that racial affirmative action is one of the most absurd things to have ever happened in college admissions. Affirmative action should be based on socioeconomics and first-gen status, not race.

You didn't read the OP -- it's not about NOT knowing what to check but rather about discrimination against Asians.

Interesting that you use the verb “dominate.” Asians shoot themselves in the foot with their goal of dominating every elite institution of higher education. When you come from countries that are deeply racist and have no tradition of pluralism, does it really surprise you that others prefer a different approach. Your kid will not face nearly the same barriers as most black or Hispanic kids just because they end up at UVA rather than Harvard.
