Well, the Nazis were certainly interested in knowing everyone's race, religion, and sexual preference. They probably viewed it as immoral when you didn't answer their questions as well.

One reason that colleges ask this is because some people want to attend a diverse university. I know my kid "of color" wants to be sure he is not the only non-white kid on campus. So if they are going to report it, they have to measure it.

What could possibly go wrong here? People "bending the rules" so they benefit. I wish people would teach their children ethics and pro-social values, instead. Remember that when these kids have the college gig behind them, they are going to populate society.

What form? Neither the Census (since 2000) nor the Common App or the Coalition App require a single race response. There is no forced single-choice answer. They specifically invite multiple responses. Choosing to only check white is what someone who is ashamed of their non-white heritage would do. That's what is sad.

The question about race on the Common Application is straightforward:

Regardless of your answer to the prior question [about Hispanic/Latino], please indicate how you identify yourself (Check one or more and describe your background).
American Indian or Alaska Native (including all Original Peoples of the Americas) Are you Enrolled? p Yes p No If yes, please enter Tribal Enrollment Number________________
Asian (including Indian subcontinent and Philippines)
Black or African American (including Africa and Caribbean)
Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander (Original Peoples)
White (including Middle Eastern)

School specific apps. On common app, he was checking 4. Our family was diverse and open-minded before it was PC.

They can always ask that info. AFTER the kids get in and provide that to potential candidates..

Oh! So you were just thinking that you could choose to be black when it is an advantage and revert back to white in all other aspects? Is that how it works?! Thanks so much for this info!

From now on, I'll just go ahead and check the White/Caucasian box when I am applying for jobs, when I'm submitting a loan application, when I am applying for country club memberships, when I am traveling to other (racist) countries, when I am signing my children up for school, when I am applying for a mortgage -- basically, when I am doing anything other than applying for one of the few slots that colleges allow African-American students to fill (not as many as you think!).

How do you all think that will work out for me?

I don't recall the need to check any box when applying for a job or loan or anything not associated with the government at various levels. Do you really think that people are discriminating against you based on you checking a box?

Sorry, I don't think my race, whether I identify it or other do, defines who I am. I just wish there was a box that was labelled "You can just stuff it for asking me this question."

Don't know. Give it a shot. In the meantime, I will continue to advocate for everyone to be as oblique as possible or pick the choice that they can get away with as far as race goes in all circumstances. It's voluntary info typically and not exactly perjury. Hell, we have liars in congress and the WH. Why not emulate them?
