Name pronounciations... do you correct for minor things?

+1. I don’t correct. I honestly don’t care which pronunciation someone uses for my last name.

I do correct for my first name. I get called Melissa a lot. My name is not Melissa. I guess I just look like a Melissa.

Any chance your name is Michelle? I swear I'm called Melissa in 25% of one-off business interactions.

Funny! Many people call me Debbie. My name is nothing close to Debbie, I just must look like a Debbie.

My kids' last name is Hungarian, and my 12 yr old corrects everyone, even if they've never met him before. He broke his arm and corrected the nurse at the ER. I think I'm finally getting through to him that strangers obviously have no idea how to pronounce it, and it's rude to act like they should automatically know. My other two just ignore it.

I will pronounce your name how I like.

If you try to correct me, I will just take it even further in that direction.

No one ever pronounces my two-syllable name correctly. I stopped fighting that battle sometime around the 2nd grade.

I used to work in a call center and out of 80 calls a day, at least 25 involved someone telling me how stupid my name was.

Laura, Anna, Tara, Cara, sorry, you're getting the local pronounciation! Even Catalina of Aragon had to be Katherine in England and she was royalty.

You should have been able to pick a pseudonym! Something ironic like "Sunny"

Yes - like a coach or a teacher (for DS - he has a name with a european sounding vowel). I do think that sometimes people really just cannot hear the difference. But if it's a LTR like a friend, I will correct (DS will not do it)

A lot of names change pronunciation depending on the country, especially Saint's names. My name changed when I lived in a Spanish speaking country. I liked it and went with it.

I think it's weird if a white bread type American said her name was “Anastasia” pronounced “an uh stah zia”. My grandma does that stuff and she has dementia. She tells people her name is Nancy "Non-cee" instead of the regular Nancy it was for 95 years.

So, Lara like Tara the way Tara Lipinsky says it or Tara like the home of the kings of Ireland?

The first one is very different from the Laura spelling, but the second seems the same to me.

Had a telemarketer called the house yesterday and mangle our name. I told her there's no one here by that name. And I was right

My daughter’s name is Caroline. Pronounced the usual way. You would NOT believe how many people say it wrong, usually Carolyn. REALLY??!? (And I’m not talking about ESL. Our Housecleaner calls her Car-o-lee-nah in a beautiful accent and I love it.)

But yes OP, I correct people who say Carolyn.

I have a first name although common enough is often mispronounced. I correct sometimes when I think the relationship is long term, like in business. Otherwise I just wince.

People are just stupid. I'd say over half the people I talk to say "Ash-uh-lee" instead of "Ash-lee". And this is a super common name. There's just not 3 syllables in Ashley.

This is a regional thing. My sister is Laura. We grew up calling her law-ra like Lara.
