Average Grocery Costs for Family

This does make me feel better. Two adults, two ravenous teens, we probably spend about $300 a week. Sometimes more.

What, how is that possible?!?

We have 3 adults (parents and 1 grandparent) and 1 toddler. Our groceries are usually $150/week, plus another $200/week on eating out. I'd guess about $20 of our grocery bill each week is household stuff like detergent, shampoo, toilet paper...etc. We eat a lot of simple big batch meals like spaghetti, chili or sheet pan chicken meals for and eat the leftovers throughout the week for dinner. Breakfasts are simple things like smoothies, oatmeal, english muffins and fruit. The cost of fruit really adds up though. We eat a lot of fast casual foods for lunch and on the weekend, like District Taco, Cava, Roti. I try to stock up on meat and put it in the freezer when it's on sale. Shoppers seems to have good sales on meat. A couple of weeks ago, I bought a ton of packs of ground turkey there on sale. I also just joined costco, maybe that will save us some money.

Family of four. We spend about $600 a month/$150 a week on groceries. We normally don't buy organic. Most of our groceries come from the local chain and Asian supermarkets. I feel this is a generous budget. This includes everything from fruits/vegetables/meat to cheese/snacks. We have plenty of variety in our diet. We usually make enough that there's leftover for lunch for everyone. If we had to, we could cut $100 and still eat well.

This chart does make me feel better.

Two adults, two children 9 and 13 (girls). We are around $900/month and that includes paper goods. This does not include entertaining, we have a separate budget for that.

I meal plan and cook most meals at home, we eat out or do take out once every two weeks or so.

This is us as well. We have a family of 4: myself, DH, a 12 year old and a 6 year old. I make a meal plan every Friday and use that to create our weekly shopping list. I cook enough so that we have leftovers to take for lunch the next day, but I don't do bulk cooking because no one in my family likes eating the same thing every day for several days on end. We have a good rotation of recipes that everyone likes. I believe that consistent meal planning and cooking at home (or at least "assembling" at home) help a lot with keeping our grocery budget reasonable. But who knows, my soon-to-be teenage son may end up eating us out of house and home over the next few years!
