They're not, at Clemente. Why would that change?

Can a parent of a child who attended the humanities magnet at Clemente comment on whether the Science and Math level was indeed very poor compared to county averages in their assessment?

Huh? This doesn't make sense. Humanities students were grouped with homeschool advanced students in their math and science classes. These were the same classes taught at other middle schools in the county.

My sixth-grader in Humanities at Clemente is taking IM and sixth-grade science. Neither class is a joke. The math class is mostly Humanities kids, because of the constraints of the schedule; the science class is more of a mix of Humanities and home-school kids.

Math is ok,science is not,and world studies teacher in previous years for 6th grade is universally hated by all students for she always talked about herself than class material!

+1, exactly. For 6th grade — Math is fine. Science is bad. World Studies teacher is awful, agree on the universal hate.

Child is current 9th grader, Clemente Humanities Alum.

She was in above grade level math all three years (IM, Algebra I, Geometry) Math classes were pretty good, because she was grouped with other above grade level kids, magnet or not they were all high performing. Scheduling in 6th grade was tough - there were some problems in the school with scheduling that year. her math class had a huge amount of students but the teacher was excellent and instructed in small groups and it really worked well.

Science was a different story.
2014-2015, 6th grade - This class was ok. Because of scheduling, even thought the class was open to all students who were not math/sci, most of the students were humanities students or GT/LD, and the class went pretty well. The content wasn't accelerated, but the class was able to move at the same speed and questions they asked were on the same level.

2015-2016, 7th grade - This was the first year of the current principal. It was not his fault, because it was decided by the previous administration, but this year the grouping in non-center classes was pretty random. In my child's class, there were three magnet students, and the rest was a cross section. By cross section, I mean the class was unruly and hard to manage, and they weren't interested. The teacher couldn't/woudn't do many labs (including frog dissection) because it would take too long to get the class to listen and cooperate, and for the frogs - she didn't want to give them a scalpel. I talked to the teacher about it, but the solutions within the class were not satisfactory, and there was nothing further that could be done on my part. Also my child didn't want to leave the other two humanities students in her class so we decided switching wasn't an option.

2016-1017, 8th grade - The new principal, after push back by the Magnet parent group, re-organized how non-magnet classes are grouped. win-win for all students. Middle and upper ability students would be grouped together, and middle to lower students who needed more help/suppoer grouped together. By this time, by child was done with science and didn't find it relevant. She was no longer interested, and Science was so easy she could get an a (at 99%) without any effort.

2017-2018, 9th grade - child is at Poolesville Humanities. Sadly, they don't have much interest in the study of science at this point, and is excited that the requirement that kids only take 3 sciences in high school will free up their schedule to take something else. Who knows what path my child's life will take, but if it includes science they'll be a late bloomer in that department, because of the middle school experience. But, boy can my child write!

A few years ago, it was hard to push back against this at Clemente - the adminstration really wanted to prevent a "school within an school" feeling. That wasn't going to happen, but they tried. Now that the program is moving, maybe it will work to advocate for this. A few years ago, I think parents had to be careful to couch requests for non-magnet class grouping as being beneficial for all highly able students, not in terms of magnet students vs non magnet students. Maybe the MLK admin will be more receptive to fostering the program itself vs. the school as a whole.

I seriously doubt it.
