-4:is not a strong Rx. OP, I'm following this. I've worn contacts for almost 30 years. One eye is -9.75 and I need bifocals. |
OP here: I'm going to go to at least one place mentioned here next week - I will post back about what I find! To the poster who mentioned cataracts surgery, it is apparently amazing for people with severe myopia to have it done - a total game changer as they can see well without contacts or glasses for the first time! My eye dr. would like me to wait on any implantable lenses due to my age - at 42, I could potentially have these eyes another 50 years and he wants to know long term effects, since most people have the surgery at a much older age. But, it will likely be an option by the time I'm in mid 50s and they continue to innovate those options. In the meantime, I'll post back my experiences with getting cute, well-fitting glasses. |
I have a super high prescription. The most comfortable frames that I have ever had are Diane Von Furstenberg frames. I am on my third pair of DVF and I still love them. |
I have -10 eyesight and can’t do Warby Parker either but I did get high index glasses for about 70$ from zenni. Quite a change from paying 400$ to lens crafters. I think there are other companies now as well that do high index glasses now for very high prescriptions. |
| -9 checking in here. I’ve had luck with the Kate Spade frames in the past and they are pretty readily available. My mom also has a pretty high prescription and also needs bifocals on top of that, and like a PP mentioned she is pretty loyal to Prada frames now. |
I also have great Barton Perriera frames, which work well with my -9.5 lenses. This thread is super useful! |

I know you said you can't do online, but I have really difficult eyes. One is a -9 with a slight astigmatism, the other is a -10. I tried Warby Parker, Zenni, and Glasses.com and none of them could get my prescription right even after multiple tries. I had just had a baby and didn't want to go to a store, so I tried David Kind and they got them right on the first try. The frames are really nice and the customer service is great. I have 1.74 high index lenses and they are pretty thin.
But now I want to try the place in Annandale that a PP mentioned!!! |
| My husband recently got high index lenses from warby Parker and is happy. I had really poor vision and astigmatism and I had LASIK 10 years ago. |

-9 in both eyes-- I've gotten Warby Parker glasses a couple of times and they have been fine. I pay extra for their high-index lenses. They worked out to about $250 I think.
When I told my opthalmologist I'd gotten Warby Parker glasses, he was horrified and said buying glasses online was not appropriate for people with my level of myopia. He told me to go to Apex Optical next time and ask for a particular optician, which I obediently did. $500 later, I had a pair of glasses that gave me terrible headaches. Took them back to the store for them to check, to see if the pupillary distance was off or something. No, everything is fine, I just "needed to get used to them." Which I was never able to do. Meanwhile, the Warby Parkers are very comfortable, and I'm about to order a new pair. |

Apex Optical in DC
Northern Virginia Doctors of Optometry (their optician) in Reston. Both are also great at picking out frames. I have high index progressives and they helped me find a great pair of relatively adorable frames that work well. |
| Great question and thread... please post back with any results! |
That makes sense, my dad is in his early 60s, and of course I hope he lives forever! He’s been so ecstatic about his eyesight it’s really funny. |
| -10/-11. There's a good selection at my optometrist's office and Costco. I couldn't believe how thin my most recent pair turned out. |
| I'm -8 and have had good luck at Costco too. I concur with the above poster who mentioned that they won't really help you choose good frames, but they have a good selection and great prices if you can choose for yourself. I go to the one in Pentagon City. |
I wear -8.75 |
