William & Mary - how competitive?

My DD got into UVA and W&M from NOVA with a C+ on her transcript, and with a completely fair assessment (as in, I'm not saying this b/c I'm her mother), I don't think she was on the lower end of the accepted spectrum. I think your son has a good chance.

It sounds like he has a good shot, OP. If he keeps his grades up and reaches a 4.2 weighted, along with SATs/ACTs in the 1500/34 range, he should be safe to get his heart set on it.

Straight As are not necessary, but too many Bs won't help. My son has good test scores (34), but a combination of insufficient weighted classes in 9th and 10th and a few B/B+ grades in 8th and 9th puts the 4.2 weighted GPA out of reach. No UVA, W&M or (possibly) VA Tech for him! (He'll probably have a 3.75/4.0 after junior year).

According to their 2017-18 Common Data Set, W&M admitted 41.7% of males versus 32% of females. Much better odds at W&M for males.

ACTs or SATs will count a great deal. While the statistical breakdown you've seen is accurate, there's no way you can easily account (in odds-making) for the discrimination against NoVa applicants. W&M and UVA just don't want NoVa applicants, and NoVa applicants really do need to be nearly perfect.

That's another great point. It is far easier to get in as a male.

That's encouraging to hear, thanks!

W&M has a specific area on their application to explain something like this (my DD used it to explain her lower grades the year I had cancer - she's a happy W&M junior now).
Continued good health to your DS!

I'm so sorry to hear about your cancer. I hope that you are doing much better now. Thanks so much for your helpful response!

Phew! This is a high bar! My son's PSAT was around 1100 (which I know is not good), so his ultimate SAT or ACT score may negate this whole endeavor. Not sure if he'll be able to raise the GPA to 4.2 weighted either - we'll see!

They rely on NOVA, are you kidding? Without NOVA, they lose thousands and thousands of students.

Maybe because out of state. I would think 4.2 & 34 ACT would get you in from VA.

simply not true. Look at the thousands of applicants from China, India and Korea. https://news.virginia.edu/content/uva-tops-admission-application-record-third-straight-year

You say this like you KNOW, but you really don't know anything at all. Its all speculation.
