I hate my manicurist talkin to her co-workers on their own language

I really, really doubt it.

This thread really makes me ill. If you don't want to hear Vietnamese or Korean spoken, paint your own damn toenails.

You are the one that is ill. Just bc they are from Korea or Vietnam does not mean they are exempt from customer service.
They CHOSE to paint toe nails so clearly they should focus on that. Does that mean it is ok for the housekeeper to yap on the phone all day while cleaning, or the janitor in a bldg, or how would you like it if you were getting waxed and that happened?
If you chose to work - be the best at it - not matter what it is you do. Dont make it sound like these woman were brought here my Americans making them do this, you are absolutely ridiculous in your comments. Do you even have idea how much they make? $10 tip for a man/ped in 45 min plus what they make hourly sounds like more than what they would make in their country.

13:16 are you actually trying to further or cement the spoiled, pampered rich bitch stereotype? Cause if so, congrats, you've done it. The fact that really slams me is that English is not your first language so obviously you're from another country and yet you feel that others who have immigrated here should be happy with our version of slave wages because in their home country slave wages are much lower. Could you be a little more self-absorbed?

New poster here. You know, 13:32, resorting to personal attacks about someone being a spoiled, rich bitch is hardly the best rhetorical technique.

How about this. I would personally hate to be a manicurist. Women who lack other skills end up doing this and would almost certainly rather do something else. I go to salons, and I engage the workers in conversation, which has been pretty interesting. I was taught that it is rude to be condescending or supercilious to service employees.

However, I was also taught that it is rude to speak in another language in front of people when you know it excludes them from the conversation.

You are right - English is not my first language and but I would never be so rude to blab to my co workers while catering to them no matter what job it is, that is what my point is.
Why cant you just work hard and focus on your job rather than feel sorry for yourself by disrespecting your customers.
How hard is it to ask if the customer even minds. I actually dont mind - but still think it is bad manners. I am open minded enough to know it is still going to happen, I am just defending the OP and her RIGHT to a pleasant experience for a paid service.

Agree. What a stupid fucking thing to complain about.

I agree. I think it's hysterical that OP feels disrespected having to listen to someone speak in another language as someone is pulling dry crusty skin off her rancid feet. OP, BRING YOUR IPOD next time.

Not the OP but speak for yourself about your dry crusty skin, ewwwwww, sounds like you really need a pedicure - and if your skin is still crusty and gross then take your damn IPOD off and tell your technician if you dare to.

And I feel bad for you or anyone who feels that co-workers talking to themselves ruins your "personal experience"-they're painting your friggin nails for chrisakes. This is not your psychiatrist taking a phone call in the middle of your session, this is not your tax attorney playing a video game while attending to your portfolio. Of course it is rude to exclude someone by language in a social situation, but guess what, this isn't a social situation-you're getting your toes shaved. You want to make friends with these women? I think not so what the hell do you care if they talk to one another? If they are doing a bad job on your mani-pedi, go elsewhere but if you are happy with the results, again, why do you care if they talk to each other? Why do I think that it really bugs you because you don't know if they are talking about you? "Princess's toes don't smell so fresh today..." If you knew they were talking about stuff that had nothing to do with you, would you care as much? I'm sorry but I don't think it's that rhetorical at all to state that this type of complaint is typical of a spoiled pampered rich bitch mentality-"these people lower than me should be quiet and happy to attend to me while I talk on my cell phone during the pedi-phase". That's really how you sound, whether you like it or not.

Do you really think these women choose to paint toenails? That they have an informed choice among doctor, lawyer, secretary, pedicurist, and they chose to scrub your feet?

That is laugh-out-loud funny.

It does not bother me a bit. I also don't assume they are talking about me. Why would they?

What's kinda scary is I think the OP and the PPs defending her really have no idea how ridiculous they sound-they are so self-absorbed they are truly clueless to how bourgeois they are coming off. Just really scary. No wonder some of the moms at the playgrounds have trouble making friends.

If they are legal - then why cant they get an education and get a better job that they actually like, heck, who needs and education these days?!?!?!?! What makes them so special? There are thousand jobs they can pick from that dont involve feet, they picked that one though....If they are illegal, then they deserve to be scrubbing feet.

That is laugh-out-loud funny.

You sound loonytunes and more than just a little bit racist.

Let's call it what it really is. RACISM. Because OP and her friends wouldn't mind the manicurists speaking English while they worked, calling out the occasional "Hey girlfriend" to each other. They wouldn't find this to be poor customer service -- they don't want a silent, robo-manicurist. They just don't want to hear guttural, sing-songy Asian languages spoken and have to worry about whether their fat asses are being criticized.
