Give me my gym back

+1 Dedicated gym rat here who applauds the new people and hopes they stay.

+1 my best friend in my early 20s was the aerobics director at our local gym. She couldn't STAND the Bs that thought they owned the gym and looked down on the folks coming to the gym for the first time. January and February were her least favorite months of the year at work because of all the kvetching she had to deal with from the nasty "I can't stand resolutioners" women. It's also extra pathetic seeing women trying to recreate the cool kid clubs in adulthood. Newsflash, no one cares that you've been going to the 6:30 PM Wednesday Turbokick class every week for the last 5 years. It doesn't make you special and it doesn't make the instructor your bestie who cares more about you than Susan who just started this week.

Anyone trying to make an improvement to their health and well being should be applauded. Yes, most will be gone by March but some of them won't, some of them will stick around and keep working out and hopefully improve their health and/or physical fitness. And the people that don't stay this year might make it stick next year.

So take your "OMG I can't wait until my favorite spin class is just us regs again" crap and stick it in your cellulite free buttocks.

+1000

And BTW, your rear end is not as "cellulite free" as you think it is.

+ 100 np I agree totally. Why not support the new people? You are the reason I will never set in a gym again. I do exercise but never in a gym. Why? because of people like the op who make fun of people trying to lose weight and be healthy. The op is probably one of those who also make fun of "fat, Americans" living in fly over states too.

Maybe if more people who are experienced actually gave support than more people would get healthier.

I am a religious gym goer and I think it is great when new people come. We were all new at some point!

I have no problem with new people. What I don't love are people who need to prove to others how cool they are Like guys who come to the weight room and do ton of curls (often in the one squat rack) and then walk around on their tiny stick legs with their chests thrown out. Or guys who do a deadlift set at 225 (dropping the bar every time) and then look around like they are waiting for a round of applause.

At my gym, the really strong people tend to be quiet and courteous and considerate - like the huge man who saw me waiting to do squats and hurried through his sets of overhead press at 185 pounds so I I could use the squat rack. Or the guy who cheerfully sets up in any odd corner when the deadlift platform is being used and proceeds to deadlift sets up to 500 pounds without dropping or banging the weights at all.

These threads pop up every early January - they’re tired and boring. We get it - you hate the people who are trying to better themselves.

NP here and I agree 100%!! I was a resolutioner at one point in my life and stuck with it, and now I cannot go without a workout. I am happy to see new people in the gym getting healthy. What makes me upset is people like the OP, and people like one of the top spin instructors at my gym, who make fun of resolutioners. This spin instructor has been using the same pathetic line in his classes for the last few weeks: "in January you'll see someone walk in wearing under armor from head to toe. If that person comes in my class, I'll make sure to make the first 15 minutes of class the hardest 15 minutes anyone has ever experienced, so that they never come back." FUCK OFF!!! why on earth would anyone say that, and not just once, but MULTIPLE times!! I finally complained to a manager b/c even though this guy is a great instructor, he is being a complete and utter asshole.

As a year-round regular, I do wish people would stagger their "fresh starts" a bit more. It can get kind of overwhelming when the regulars are there and a million newbies show up all at the same time. Most gyms aren't really equipped for that. Adding to the problem is that a lot of outdoor exercisers are coming inside this time of year to avoid inclement weather.

The gym could do more, too. I wish they would put more signs up about gym etiquette, especially regarding cell phones. It's one thing when you have 50 people in there and half are playing on their phones on the weight stations. It's another thing when 200 are in there and half are on their phones - makes it hard to get the machines you need. The regulars are guilty of this too, and I'd love more signs to be posted year round.

I'd also love signs that point out that a particular machine is the only one of its kind in the whole gym - then maybe people wouldn't monopolize that one weight station for 15 minutes with 3 minutes actual lifting and 12 of checking their phone.

And last, I'd love it if the gym posted signs about coming on time (or a few minutes early) for classes. It's a lot easier to fit everyone into a crowded class (like yoga) if people aren't trickling in up to 15 minutes late. (most of the regulars know this.)

I like it when people do good things for their health and fitness. But I also wish they'd do good things year-round and not all on January 2nd.

That definitely makes him a certified not-great instructor.

The gyms/fitness places offer really good deals at this time of year. So some of the blame is on them.

oh you must be the miserable twit who couldn't conceal her disdain seeing my fat ass in YOUR workout class

I joked when I put my mat down next to you that I must be out of my league since half the people present for the class were men (rare in my experience, and probably a sign of a more intense workout)

You said "probably, if you've never exercised before."

At high-end athletic clubs everyone makes good money, so they all wear nice new apparel and spotless shoes.

I was beside two newbies today. Good for them!

Yes It's busier. It always evens out in a month or two.
