Nicest skiing town/resorts within 6 hour drive of DC?

The town of Manchester is cute and you can stay there and drive to stratton pretty easily (15-20 mins). There are nice places at the base of Stratton too. I've stayed at the Equinox in Manchester. You can also ski Killington and stay in Woodstock although that's a longer drive. We stay at the Woodstock Inn.

I have never been to Hunter Mountain but I thought there was some kind of village there.

I agree with the PP that Stratton (and Manchester or Arlington) are great bets. It has never taken us over 7 hours, even a few years ago when we left the morning after that horrendous ice storm right around President's Day weekend I think it was. Sometimes we'll drive straight there and stay at an inn but other times we'll leave right after school lets out at 3, drive to Albany or Troy, stay there and then wake up early to be at the slopes when they open. Then we will spend Friday & Saturday at an inn in Manchester or Arlington.

As kids we grew up skiing Stowe, Lake Placid (it was called White Face then), and Mont Tremblant. You will find that Stratton is a very family friendly version of those locales and nothing to sneeze at. With a family (kids) I would go the Stratton route over Killington.

Also, Manchester is a little closer to Bromley than Stratton but we prefer Stratton. Although it does make a nice diversion to go to Bromley for the day.

I agree with the above recommendation for Stratton. I think the posters who said that the drive to Stratton is very long are thinking of Stowe, which is a much longer drive (although cuter town!).

Suck it up on go to Colorado. I recommend Vail or Beaver Creek.

A couple of hours? If you're lucky or driving after midnight. Last time we drove up there it took 13 hours.

It takes us 7.5-8 hours. Done it multiple times.

Tremblant is seriously freezing, except in spring.

I vote for the Rockies too... The flight to Denver is not so bad and then you have 1-2 hours of driving, depending on where you go. We love Copper Mountain with small kids.

How is this helpful when the OP was very clear flying is not an option?

The one time we went to Seven Springs I was minding my own business meandering down a quiet little trail not heavily used. Some idiot came up behind me completely out of control, and instead of throwing himself on the snow or using a basic maneuver to avoid hitting me, he slammed into me full force. Huge, heavy kid. My body cushioned his fall. The trail was plenty wide enough to go around me with a slight bit of maneuvering, and i was happily working my way down along one edge of the trail, not in the middle of the trail. I didn't even have time to react before he slammed into me. I was out of commission for the remainder of our vacation, and barely made it back to the lodge on my own. It took a long time because I was injured and in severe pain. I am never going back. The main problem with the local ski resorts is that they're full of people who don't know how to ski and won't take lessons before getting on the slopes.

This doesn't exist. Either drive father or fly. One option with a short/cheap flight is Bretton Woods in New Hampshire. Or Stratton.

Sorry this happened to you. This could happen anywhere within driving distance of DC.

+1. I got hit three times in one day at Blue Mountain.

Transplant from Western New York here, Holiday Valley in Ellicottville, NY is actually very nice. Both the resort and town are very nice and the skiing is decent with I think about 50 runs.

It's about 6.5 hours away but many from around the great lakes and Canada vacation there.

If you go, in town you can't miss Dina's for dinner and Ellicottville Brewing Company for both food and drinks.

I love me some Timberline but in absolutely no way is it upscale.

You seem like a very nice person PP but why would anyone go to Western NY when they can get to southern VT with just a bit more driving? Not even a comparison.
