Go to Stratton. It's a couple hours past your drive time but otherwise fits your description. The town of Manchester is cute and you can stay there and drive to stratton pretty easily (15-20 mins). There are nice places at the base of Stratton too. I've stayed at the Equinox in Manchester. You can also ski Killington and stay in Woodstock although that's a longer drive. We stay at the Woodstock Inn. I have never been to Hunter Mountain but I thought there was some kind of village there.
I agree with the PP that Stratton (and Manchester or Arlington) are great bets. It has never taken us over 7 hours, even a few years ago when we left the morning after that horrendous ice storm right around President's Day weekend I think it was. Sometimes we'll drive straight there and stay at an inn but other times we'll leave right after school lets out at 3, drive to Albany or Troy, stay there and then wake up early to be at the slopes when they open. Then we will spend Friday & Saturday at an inn in Manchester or Arlington. As kids we grew up skiing Stowe, Lake Placid (it was called White Face then), and Mont Tremblant. You will find that Stratton is a very family friendly version of those locales and nothing to sneeze at. With a family (kids) I would go the Stratton route over Killington. Also, Manchester is a little closer to Bromley than Stratton but we prefer Stratton. Although it does make a nice diversion to go to Bromley for the day.
