Do you believe in family generational curses?

Anonymous
I sometimes wonder if my family is blessed. We survived war, famine, genocide, and even natural disasters with every family member intact. Some of it is because of our smarts and resources but mostly it seems to be dumb luck or the kindness of strangers. I'm so grateful and am a little fearful the good luck will run out in my generation so I always try to count my blessings and give back.

Yes. This is documented in the Bible and it's not a metaphor.

"You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me"

What’s that from, Genesis?

This. Some evangelical churches encourage you to try and break generational curses if you notice a pattern. I was reminded of this pattern again when I saw what happened to the Vegas criminal, his Dad and his brother.

The Lemp Brewery family in St. Louis was cursed.

It does seem like there was a Tudor curse. And a Kennedy curse.

I don't believe in curses, but it does sort of seem like Joe Kennedy made some sort of deal with the devil (like he wished "I want my family to be rich, famous and powerful!" and the devil said "done!" while laughing to himself ("yes, and riddled with addiction, scandal, and untimely deaths....").

Lots of families have bad things happen to them, but they are famous, so we don't hear about them.

1 The word of Yhwh came to me: 2 What do you mean by repeating this proverb concerning the land of Israel, “The parents have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are blunted”? 3 As I live, says the Lord Yhwh, this proverb shall no more be used by you in Israel. 4 Know that all lives are mine; the life of the parent as well as the life of the child is mine: it is only the person who sins that shall die. - Ezekiel

Know, therefore, that only Yhwh your God is God, the steadfast God who keeps His covenant faithfully to the thousandth generation of those who love Him and keep His commandments, 7:10 but who instantly requites with destruction those who reject Him—never slow with those who reject Him, but requiting them instantly. Deuteronomy.

Parents shall not be put to death for children, nor children be put to death for parents: a person shall be put to death only for his own crime.- Deuteronomy

But if this man has a son who sees all the sins that his father has done, considers, and does not do likewise, 15 who does not eat upon the mountains or lift up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, does not defile his neighbor’s wife, 16 does not wrong anyone, exacts no pledge, commits no robbery, but gives his bread to the hungry and covers the naked with a garment, 17 withholds his hand from iniquity, takes no advance or accrued interest, observes my ordinances, and follows my statutes; he shall not die for his father’s iniquity; he shall surely live. 18 As for his father, because he practiced extortion, robbed his brother, and did what is not good among his people, he dies for his iniquity. Ezekiel

Yet you say, “Why should not the son suffer for the iniquity of the father?” When the son has done what is lawful and right, and has been careful to observe all my statutes, he shall surely live. 20 The person who sins shall die. A child shall not suffer for the iniquity of a parent, nor a parent suffer for the iniquity of a child; the righteousness of the righteous shall be his own, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be his own. Ezekiel

These can be reconciled with the quote above - it refers to families that still hate G-d after 3 or 4 generations, and have not changed their ways.

What if only part of the family hates God and the rest of the family loves god?

I think all the quotes from Ezekial should explain that.

The kennedys are cursed for their many sins for which they have failed to repent.

Stuttering runs in my father’s mother’s family. You can search for Rebecca Glass on YouTube to see my cousin describe the challenges she has faced on television. I have it but became known as a very aggressive trial lawyer.

On the other hand, my father’s father’s family has had this curse that the fathers and sons hate each other. This has been going on for generations. It caused my brother to decide never to have a family. But maybe it’s over. I’ve brought this up with my ten year old son twice, and both times he said “but we get along great!”

The stutter goes on however. I started stuttering at three and my mother would beat me and say that I was shaming the family. That kind of treatment usually makes the stutter permanent as it did with me. Likewise, my son started stuttering at three. It got so bad that he could barely push out a sentence. I gave my wife strict instructions on how to deal with it. Give him all the time he needs and keep a passive face. Don’t walk out of the room. Never finish his sentences for him. Never criticize him for stuttering and, just as importantly, never praise him for not stuttering. within a year, his stutter deconstructed to how it started and faded away.
