Do you believe in family generational curses?

Started thinking about different families backgrounds and how they often repeat their tragic family history.

I don't believe in curses, let along generational ones.
Anonymous
No. Makes for a fun summer beach read, though.

Just curious -- how is this related to religion? Do the curses come from God?
Anonymous
Yes. It's called a familiar spirit.

Ancestral karma, maybe.

Actually, I didn't really before, but now I am starting to.

My maternal great grandmother (mother's, mother's, mother) lost her husband when he was in his 50s to a massive heart attack. This was in the mid 1940s.

My grandmother's (mother's mother) husband became very ill and pretty much bed ridden for many year and kept alive with life support. Eventually died at 72. This was about 20 years ago.

My father passed away from cancer at 67 after a short illness just this year.

So I am starting to believe my maternal family is cursed. God help my husband.

Genetics.

Sad history of alcoholic gamblers--probably genetic predispositions.

No. I believe in genetics and the tendency for people to behave in dysfunctional ways they learned from their parents, though.

Cursed with what, death at roughly the age that most men of their generation died at? Sorry about your dad, he was the only outlier.

I do too...genectics and learned dsyfunction are difficult to overcome. My family has both.

Staying away from alchohol and cigarettes is helpful too, and very hard for people who are self medicating.

I believe it was sarcastic.

This.

I do believe in inherited mental illness and the impact of dysfunction across generations. I’m fighting against it and winning. Started with my kids in infancy. One is 24 and showing it pays off.

I sometimes wonder. Look at the Kennedy's

Not really curses.

There are purely genetic problems of course. Otherwise, it's probably the result of repeated behaviors, not necessarily a curse. Spoiling children rotting so they fail in life, generation after generation. Never taking risks. Taking too many risks. Bad attitudes about education. Physical abuse. Alcoholism. Behaviors such as these get passed on and people never seem to learn from sometimes. Someone mentioned the Kennedys. I wouldn't say it's a curse. Just a lot of bad behavior. You reap what you sow.
