Everything is cyclical. I grew up in a house full of what is now called MCM stuff and I couldn't get away from it fast enough. It's been around but it was out of style for a long time. I always found it cold and not at all welcoming or comfortable. I was lucky enough to have access to a lot of grandparental furniture which my kids like and enjoy also. People should get what they like and what makes their place feel like home to them. Don't worry about what is in style. |

Agree. MCM=Super ugly.
Love bungalow style craftsman. |
| I thought she meant Marine Corps Marathon! |
| I like MCM bc it is unfussy. My own home was built in that era but really I have no midcentury decor, so.... |
|
The MCM that's popular now is a more updated version. Think Emily Henderson. It's softer, more textured, but still clean lines.
I HATE that Louis XVI furniture posted upthread. It's vomit inducing. It looks like something a Saudi royal would have in their house. Or a house in Potomac here where 20 people live together. |
OK? That's not MCM at all. That's more like Stickley/Shaker/Craftsman. |
MCM is very simple, straight lines, basic circles or curves. Not plush. Think the homes from Bewitched or I Dream of Jeannie. Some examples
|
| looks cold |
|
Yep, the houses in Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie. So unfriendly looking. Not the kind of decor that gives you a feeling of home, warmth, comfort, family.
|
| Gorgeous! Hate all this oversized lazy boy fat people furniture that people have nowadays. |
Yeah, this is more of a Craftsman style |
+1 |
| I love my MCM house. It is so WARM because of all the light! I mix and match decor. Just bought a few mCM pieces....interesting with unique angles and curves. I also have a Lazboy sofa so I guess DCUM loves to hate my house. It is comfortable and quirky, though, so I am good. |
Of course it has been around that long, but it's only been fashionable for ten years or so. No one was making their houses look that way on purpose in the 80s or 90s. |
| PP here--by the way, those "I like this" photos are basic mission. Too Matchy-matchy for me. |
