Two weeks to go

We don't know anyone in DC (since we only moved here a year ago and have no friends whose children attend these schools) and I'm afraid that our lack of any "connections" as well as the overwhelming application numbers will leave us out completely. Plus, our child's current Director has not received any phone calls asking about our child by any of the schools we applied for.

I'm panicking that if we do get shut out, where the heck will we send our child next year?

Do preschool admissions directors really call the child's current director???

from our experience when we were applying DC's school was very much in contact with prospective schools during the application process although I don't know if this really made a difference. I got alot of feed back on how many spaces were available etc.

Sorry, one more question. How old was your child? DD is three - would the prospective nursery/preschools be in contact with her playgroup's director? I ask because her director hasn't mentioned anything like this to me.

Thanks.

Any helpful words from parents who have been through this? I stress myself out thinking what if DD gets rejected across the board or is the proper term "shut out".

Someone told recently that the worst thing that can happen is we are on waitlist status because then the wait drags on. Is that true? If you got off such a list which school and how long before you got a call?

i am not stressed out at all. i don't say that to rub it in but i am just curious...why exactly are you so stressed out? is it that you have no public school option or what? i'm seriously wondering why are you so worried? i am in the process as well and am not stressed out at all. i think things will work out. relax. it is not the end of the world. if you don't get in anywhere you can always find other options. trust me, they might not be your first choice but they will be ok there for a year until you reapply next year. seriously my whole family went to public schools growing up and we all went to awesome colleges so have faith. i'm not pushing public on you i am just saying our public school was good but not the best in the state or anything and we still went to great schools and ended up doing well. it will be okay. really.

We applied for 3 years in a row before getting in - from age 2-4 and each time they had comments on how the schools were doing with the process. Mind you they were general comments nothing specific about DC. Just things like "I got a call from so and so principal about one of the children.. and he/she said they had x number of spaces." They never said anything to me about my DC particularly nor did they tell me that the principal had called about my DC - they never mentioned any names.

I want my child to get in so badly that's all. It's all about me. My child is smart and outgoing and great and will do just fine at our good public school. It's about me and wanting to send her somewhere "I" feel good about for all the reasons. There you have it.

sorry, maybe this is because i am trying to multi-task and watch the debate at the same time, but i am confused...

are folks saying the admissions depts from the various schools are calling the directors of current daycares/preschools to ask about students they are interested in?

Depends on the preschool. If you're talking your close to work daycare/preschool, then no. If you're talking NCRC, St. Johns, Little Folks, etc. then yes.

Really??? I'm obviously very naive. Thank you for clarifying.

Now I'm really getting stressed out! But thank you nonetheless.

Is it really true that a thick enveloppe means you're in, and a thin one means you're not?

Also: if your DD or DS gets in somewhere, how do you plan on telling him or her? Andif they don't? (I'm talking about kindergarteners) Just curious.

Oh, for heaven's sake, just open the envelope!

We haven't told our child that acceptance depends on the school, and I don't think we'll get into the particulars of where she did and did not get in. TMI, IMHO. When the dust settles and we know where she's going, we'll tell her that we chose that particular program because we thought it was a good school. Fortunately, she liked all the schools she visited but doesn't seem all that attached to any particular one.

And I thought I was beyond being freaked out. Oh well!

We applied to one school for pre-k.

If our child gets in, we will say: "Great news! Remember the school we visited to see if you liked it? It's a good school for you and you can go there when you are too big to go to (current school). Some of your friends will be going there too!"

If DC does not get in, we will say, "Great news! You will be able to go to (current school) again next year. Everyone at school will be so happy that you can stay!"

Applied for K here. I wouldn't say anything until the end of the summer.

Yes, thick envelopes/large envelopes mean acceptances. Thin envelopes mean waitlist or rejection.
