Did College Park really just allow non-citizens the right to vote?

Yes, the measure allows for undocumented folks to register, but the assumption is that they're unlikely to do so since they want to stay off the radar. Local officials only anticipate that green card holders, visa holders, etc., are likely to register.

So the "law" is based on an assumption?

Many laws are based on assumptions. We assume that a 16-ish year old is mature enough to be responsible with a car. We assume that an 18 year old is mature enough to vote, be responsible for signing a contract, enlist in the military, hold a full time job, etc. We make assumptions about who should be eligible for benefits programs. We make assumptions about all kinds of things.

If anyone can justify the ridiculousness of this, I will tip my hat to you.

They're residents of the town and likely pay taxes as well. They have an interest in governance.

Hahahahahahaha that's pretty funny.

Do you live in College Park?

So they snuck into our country (breaking the law!) and are entitled to legally vote in an election? I don't consider "they are residents of the town" an appropriate justification.

They pay sales tax and property tax through rent. And since college park does not collect its own income tax, that means they are paying all local taxes involved in any local elections.

Also, in many cases, payroll taxes and income taxes. And property taxes directly, for unauthorized immigrants who own property. PP, you should pay closer attention to the news!

^^^Also, a big fraction of unauthorized immigrants didn't "sneak into the country (breaking the law!)" -- they entered the country legally, then overstayed their visas.

They are NOT undocumented immigrants, they are called illegal aliens. Use the correct terms. No immigration is allowed without following the rules.

It's funny that it bothers you so much. I guess you don't care much for democracy. States rights are a central part of our system, and similarly states grant municipalities the right to make their own laws. these sovereigns chose who can have the vote. that's democracy for 'ya!

But it doesn't really matter. Their documented status is a federal issue. What does that have to do with a CITY that wants to give all its residents a vote?

ICE can check the voter rolls for suspects.

And in many cases they work under the table. You should pay attention to the real world!

who cares? maryland allows all convicted felons to vote now.

I fail to see the relevance between voting and being a official citizen of a place. If you reside there, that should be enough. Otherwise we are just advocating that we have a lower class of people who don't get to have a say. That's not right. Everyone should get to vote.
