| No way. $150 is about my max for hotels... I do stay in nice hotels too. I like Hotel Monaco and Hiltons (so I'm not staying in the Motel 6, they can turn their light off). |
|
We're about $260k HHI and we probably max out at around $350 / night for hotels. If I paid $1000 / night I'd take far fewer trips and they'd be a lot shorter.
I wouldn't sleep because I'd be trying to use up all the shampoo, lotion, and coffee in the room to get my money's worth. |

I cannot fathom a situation where I would spend $1000/month -- half my mortgage -- on a night in a hotel.
I start to feel sick if I contemplate spending more than $200/night. I absolutely look for deals, particularly on airfare. There are so many sales that it's foolish not to. |
We can afford it and we wouldn't pay that either. I've talked to my kids about hotels like that as we've walked in to look around while on vacation and they are entranced by them...however we have talked about whether it is worth it: would you rather pay for a hotel that is three times the cost of the place we are currently in OR would you rather we in the place we're in and keep in your bank account the difference? I HOPE THEY HEAR ME. I realize that I could pass away and my kids could elect to use this money to stay in the hotels that I am not...but that's on them. I would hope that they are learning the lesson that there are better things to spend the money on. |

Depends. We look for deals but we also splurge.
We're going to Bora Bora in the spring and plan on spending 1k/night for an over water bungalow. |
| Yes & yes. When spending that much per night I make sure it is a deal, as in normally the room/suit would be even more. If the room normally is $1.5k a night and we spend $1... that's still a deal. We don't take vacations often, and when we do we go all out. |
It's fine to not spend the money, but the reaction is so over the top. What car do you drive? I'm sure there are cheaper ones. Where do you do your grocery shop? I'm sure there are cheaper places. Where do you eat out? You don't need to eat out. You can cook at home. What kind of house do you live in? There are cheaper ones. What kind of bags/shoes/clothes do you wear? Name brands aren't necessary and all can be bought on sale. Unless you're leading a minimalist lifestyle, aren't you just kind of a judgmental hypocrite? |

No never. I always assumed no-one paid those rates!?
We go on a lot of trips and I always find deals and often us points, for flights or hotels. We always pay less than $200 a night whether it's a hotel or vacation rental and usually less than $150. in fact, often less than $100. That's for three or four star hotels. I'm very happy with how we vacation. We could spend more but it would be frivolous and unnecessary. Plus this way I can justify more trips! |
| We def deal shop for car rentals deals. We fly business/first class but usually with points. We stay in 5-star hotels but I'm not sure I could ever justify $1K a night. |
| I look for deals on AIRFARE and then just go all in on the hotel. But for me the vacation is 35% about the luxuriousness of my hotel room, 20% about the location (i.e. I'm not booking a airfare deal to Huntsville), 20% about the sites and touring on location, and 25% about shopping, spas and room service. |
+1. Not to mention guilt. I'm a logical person and to me, there's just absolutely no logical reason to spend that much money for a hotel per night for a vacation. |
I've spent $400/night for a hotel. But my vacations are my rewards for long hours at work. In consulting/sales, you need something to take the slack off. I'm rather it be a luxurious penthouse than drugs. If you however are buying hotel rooms for an entire family, then of course its a ridiculous expense. |
This is us too. I can't fathom paying 1K a night, but we do love to travel, and do at least two big trips a year plus some weekends away, so still spend a fair amount overall. I'd rather a longer trip, or more of them, then just a few nights in a really expensive hotel. To me $350 a night is a splurge. |
+1 One of my siblings spends a ton on vacations but thinks I'm profligate for spending 5$ on farmer's market spinach. We all have our luxuries (whether they're big or small). |

Can someone explain to me the difference between a hotel room that's $500-$600 a night and one that's $1000 or over? I would think that at some point, luxury is luxury and there isn't THAT much of a difference?
BTW, I'm in the camp of spending about $200 for a room, but have splurged in the past and stayed in a place that was about $500. I could definitely tell the difference, but a room is a room is a room. And I'm not talking about a $500 ROOM versus a $1000 SUITE. So, I'm not asking about getting more rooms/bathrooms for the night - I understand that. I'm saying all things equal (just a hotel ROOM) - what's the difference once you hit that luxury point? |
