Yes, look for deals and/or use hotel points. Wouldn't pay $1k/night but that's because we can't afford it.
We can afford it and we wouldn't pay that either. I've talked to my kids about hotels like that as we've walked in to look around while on vacation and they are entranced by them...however we have talked about whether it is worth it: would you rather pay for a hotel that is three times the cost of the place we are currently in OR would you rather we in the place we're in and keep in your bank account the difference? I HOPE THEY HEAR ME. I realize that I could pass away and my kids could elect to use this money to stay in the hotels that I am not...but that's on them. I would hope that they are learning the lesson that there are better things to spend the money on.
It's fine to not spend the money, but the reaction is so over the top. What car do you drive? I'm sure there are cheaper ones. Where do you do your grocery shop? I'm sure there are cheaper places. Where do you eat out? You don't need to eat out. You can cook at home. What kind of house do you live in? There are cheaper ones. What kind of bags/shoes/clothes do you wear? Name brands aren't necessary and all can be bought on sale. Unless you're leading a minimalist lifestyle, aren't you just kind of a judgmental hypocrite?
+1 One of my siblings spends a ton on vacations but thinks I'm profligate for spending 5$ on farmer's market spinach. We all have our luxuries (whether they're big or small).
