So, where did Mayor Fenty's kids show up for school?

He is the mayor for heaven's sake. He should be able to send his kids to school whereever he darn well pleases.

Really? I didn't know that the rules no longer apply when you are an elected official.

She said should, not is. And I agree with her. This isn't about him being an elected official, it's about people disliking him as mayor.

19:28 Poster here - For me at least, this isn't about liking or disliking Fenty. It is about fairness.

Well, I guess in the end they did jump the line. Gross. I feel worse for the neighborhood school they skipped out on -- what would it feel like to be a parent/ child there, when the "Education Mayor" basically says, "Well, not for MY kid...."

So how long was the line they jumped? Seems like it would feel worse to be on the Lafayette list and told "your kid's education isn't as important as the mayor's kids". Children are expected to take their turn in line. Why not Fenty?

14:16 here... Being a politician in this day and age is a thankless job. You open yourself up to a bunch of criticism, judgment, ridicule and total loss of privacy. Whether or not you like Fenty is beside, over and around the point. Whatever his motives, whatever his political agenda... none of it matters because he has done what 99.9% of us on this board will never do; make the choice to expose his and the lives of his family to the world all to serve the citizens of DC. He could be in private practice somewhere making a lot more money but he is a public servant. By choice, yes! But still choosing to serve your needs and the needs of your families.

The least you all could do is allow the man to "jump the line" and let him pick the DCPS he wants for his kids. He could have pulled the ultimate power move and put his kids in Horace Mann.

What, as others have asked, President Obama getting his girls into Sidwell in the middle of the year? I am glad Fenty's children are in public school. I am sure other city officials and children of DCPS teachers have leapfrogged over the OOB waitlist.

And yes maybe he got lucky twice in the lottery! Or once and they invoked sibling preference.

Obviously your child was not on the Lafyette wait list. Please respond again when your child is on a waitlist for one of the better schools (there are not that many) and you are knowingly booted for someone simply because they have hizzoner in front of their name. hmmm

The ability for D.C. teachers to have their children in the same school where they teach only applies to teachers who actually live in the district. It does not apply to the many who come from other counties/states.

So what you are saying is everyone knows where on the list there kids were? Yes it sucks that his kids got in and someones else's didn't but can you tell me for sure who would be going to Lafyette if the Fenty boys were not there. Part of the problem with a lottery system . . . you never know who the WINNERS will be . . . and sometimes they can appear rigged . . . this sucks for those who did not get in

They tell you your number in the lottery. So you know how many people will be called before you. And in the lottery, the parent must do a separate application for each child. Therefore one child may get in, but all the other siblings may not. And yes siblings are given preference, but that is only if a sibling is already enrolled in the school. Not incoming siblings.

This is what is wrong with Mayor Fenty choosing any school he wants.

That is not the case at the DCPS school we attend

How about that. If they did not know before, I guess the parents and teachers at West Elementary, as well as the entire DC Metro area now know that the school sucks. And, the education mayor by his actions said as much. Oh and please for all those who say, I have a problem because I don't like Fenty, are you saying that I can not voice an objection to an elected official. I am either always 100% for him/her or I am against. Sounds eerily familiar. You are either for me or against me. DuhDuh. And so noone stood up. Ridiculous

I doubt it. During the brief period in which he practiced law he came very close to being disbarred.
