Exactly. It's so racist. Black girl was going to college, but she was gunned down instead. SMH. |
The gang/thug problem in DC is a nightmare. |
There is no mention of race in the headline. "College-bound Wilson High graduate hit by stray bullet dies." You can be offended if you want to be, but what it highlights is: * An accidental death * A gun-related accident * The tragic death of a young person on the verge of the next big step of her life There are only so many words that can fit in a headline, before you have to read the article to get the details. I am offended by her tragic, senseless death, not the attention-grabbing headline of the story about it. |
Sadly, if you google those words "college-bound" and "killed," you will see that it is a sad and common headline for children of any race who die the summer before college, including this child, the white boy whose parachute didn't open in California, the black girl killed in a road rage incident in PA, the black boy killed in a Craig's list sale gone bad in Fla., the white boy stuck by lightening in AZ, the kids killed in car accidents, the drug overdoses, the suicides, and on and on and on. They are all children whose lives ended far, far too soon, and the summer before college. "College bound" is a part of their personal life stories. She was leaving in just a week; the article talks about that, so the headline is on point. Every individual has a story. This was part of hers. Please, let people mourn without making it about something its not. This one article is about this one child and the future she has been denied. |
| It is very scary as the parent of a young person in DC, to know how cheap life is to some out there. I really implore DC officials to look at how they police young people and their lax Youth Rehabilitation Laws. |
| I'm disgusted and heartbroken. I didn't know this girl personally but know someone who is very closet to her uncle. I am extremely sad. |
Why is Bowser seemingly popular when DC is once again standing for "dysfunctional city"? |
Popular with who??? |
Agree. I don't know anyone that likes Bowser, and I have friends from varying backgrounds. |
The Dem party establishment. And when you have a one-party district then corruption is inherent. |
|
She and the council have literally done nothing on crime, and youth crime in particular - despite multiple Post article series on poor adjudication legislation for youth that may be contributing to the revolving door or youth offenders who sadly often victimize other youths |
| I'm sad and I'm angry. This crime occured not far from where I live. The perp had been arrested for something else only a month prior to this. Why was he out on the streets with a gun? We need to hold the system accountable. This is a tragedy and a failure of the DC criminal justice system. |
| And this is why when people tell me they're going to raise their kids in Brookland I just shake my head. This was a good kid, dad is a cop, and wasn't in the thug lifestyle, and just got hit by a stray bullet. Awful. |
OP here. Not to quibble, but I think the mom was the cop. From the article: "Sydnor’s mother is a 30-year police veteran who has worked as a detective in the homicide unit and is now assigned to the youth division handling sexual abuse cases." So sad, and ironic in the case of mom's prior work on the homicide unit. I so wish I knew how to address the entrenched crime in the city more effectively.
