Covers that improve on the original (music)

Anonymous
Not exactly a cover, but the musical Across the Universe did an incredible job weaving together Beatles songs into a compelling storyline.

Also as much I hate to admit it b/c the show was such crap, but Glee's rendition of Journey's Don't Stop Believing. The original is awesome though.

Nirvana - Man Who Sold The World

Those are the two that always come into mind as covers being so much better than originals.

Who was the original singer to Because The Night? I had no idea that was a cover.

Springsteen wrote Because the Night but it's most closely associated with Patti Smith.

And I thought of another good one - the Dixie Chicks' cover of Dylan's "Mississippi."

Blasphemy!

I do like Sinead's cover of Nothing Compares to U and TLC's cover of If I Was Your Girlfriend.

"Wild Horses" by the Sundays (vs. Rolling Stones)
"Sweet Jane" by the Cowboy Junkies (vs. Velvet Underground)
"Country Road Take Me Home" by Love Seed Mama Jump (vs. John Denver)
"Nothing Compares 2 U" by Chris Cornell is pretty great.
"Black" by Aaron Lewis (vs. Pearl Jam)
"killing me softly" by the Fugees (vs. Roberta Flack)
"Whiskey in the Jar" by Metallica (vs. Thin Lizzy/Dubliners, but I had to look up who sang the original)
"Love Roller Coaster" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers (vs. the Ohio Players)
I think "Boyz in the Hood" by Dynamite Hack (vs. Eazy-E) is pretty great too.
