How tall is THAT tall for a 14yo girl?

Anonymous
I would expect a girl to be done growing by about age 15. Girls who gain height after that are probably in the minority. It's different for boys who are usually done by 18 or 19. I know some kids gain height later than that, but it's unusual.

I am short. When I was a teen, I hated being short. But as an adult, I really do not care. My 8yo DD is tall for her age, but we will see. 'Que Sera, Sera'.

I am short too. I am 4'11" as an adult and was 4'8"/4'9" when I started high school at 14. I absolutely hate it! People call me "cute" and "sweet" instead of "hot" or "beautiful." I am 27, not 7! People used to pat me on the head until I told them to stop. I am an HS teacher and constantly get mistaken for a student despite wearing a faculty ID card and business casual clothes. Buying clothes is a royal pain, because I have to get everything tailored or it will fit perfectly in one area, but not well at all in another. I have to climb on shelves in the grocery store to reach items. If I gain 3 pounds, it looks more like 15 pounds. I would give anything to even be average height (~5'4").

To make you feel better. When all things are being equal, shorter people tend to have less heart problems.

Well there's that, I guess. The only advantage I see is when I get on an airplane. Since I am just over 5 ft tall, it is tolerable as I am the height of an average 11 year old. Still it is embarrassing having to climb on shelves in the grocery store to get what I need half the time. Oh well, there are way worse things in life, although a few more inches would have been really nice! And the whole 'cute' thing is annoying, I agree. Never hot, just cute, like a toddler.

Often a child's perception of peer group is driven by whether they are involve din sports, or which sports. Some sports like gymnastics favor shorter girls, wheres volleyball favors taller. So if she hangs out with a group of taller girl athletes, she's likely to feel like she isn't as tall as she really is, compared to all girls across the country.

+1 I was a gymnast that ended up at 5'6" and wished I was shorter. My cousin who is the same height and played basketball wished she could grow a few inches.

Same here! I loved gymnastics and was terrible at basketball despite being 5'9". I dreamed of being 5'2"! I did not like being tall growing up. Now that I am an adult, I don't mind as much. I am still kind of lanky and that makes me a little insecure at times.

According to medical standard charts, 5'8" is the 96.9 percentile and 5'9" is 98.7 percentile, so it's tall. 6' would be 99.9 percentile.

So, while she may want to be tall, she's already very tall and there are very few girls that age who are that tall.

I was 5'9" at that age and always felt self-conscious about it. Now I'm always slightly shocked when I run into a taller woman and honestly a little bit jealous. I work with a young woman who's clearly ~6' and I love how confident she is and how she jokes with her "short" husband (5'10").

I grew up feeling like the shortest teen girl in former Yugoslavia, at 5'4". Many girls were 6'. Here, people mock me in my predominantly Jewish neighborhood if I even mention my height or how DD wishes she was taller, so I don't. Your DD will grow some more most likely. Perception is everything. If boys are growing taller and taller, it only makes sense that girls are too.

I found the highlighted to be a curious statement for modern times as opposed to say 1950s Brooklyn. Tall Jew here. There are plenty of us. Are you trying to imply 90% of your neighborhood is not only really short, but also Jewish or do you just assume every short person you see there is Jewish? It is only Jews complaining about your height? I believe there are neighborhoods with lots of Jews and I believe there are lots of short Jews (and members of all different groups). I just cannot imagine it is just a gang of tiny Jews giving you a hard time about your height.

My 14 year old daughter just had her sports physical (volleyball) last week and she measured 6 feet on the nose. Everyone in the Dr.'s office gathered around to marvel at her height. I'm a tad jealous because I'm only 5'5! She's very comfortable with her height and looks very regal standing next to her father, who is almost 6'5. Like everything else with girls, we have to keep driving the point home that they have to accept and love themselves just as they are, and make the most of what they have!

Actually, I think the average for girls is 16. Most women in my family, (even the ones who are average) grow till about 18, which is obviously out of the norm

NP, at age 15 I was about 5'7". I am now 5'11. I didn't stop growing until about age 20.

Did you get your period late? My mom grew up to her senior year of HS but didn't get her period until 16.

What? No, I meant no offense or generalization. Our Jewish friends are quite short. Teen boys around 5'4" several tiny bit taller, my Jewish female friends are short. Under 5feet tall, several of them. And maybe I didn't express it well, but our other non Jewish neighbors are on the short side too. No, it is not Jewish moms only that give me a hard time about it, it is many moms of many different backgrounds. I can see how my post came as generalization of an ethnic and religious group. Sorry about that.
