Fairfax City Schools?

Sorry, that last sentence about AAP is regarding Lanier, not Providence. I believe all the AAP kids at FFX city schools go to Mosby Woods.

Providence loses about 20 high performing kids each year to Mosby Woods AAP.

Those kids attend Fairfax Vila, Frost and Woodson high

No Lanier? That's odd since it is in walking distance of the trailer park.

They were part of the group that was recently redistricted from FFX to Woodson (and Lanier to Frost). Geographically, it doesn't make sense, but I think you could say that about lots of places in Fairfax County, where the zones generally stretch west with the actual school tucked into the most eastern portion of the district.

My DD is at Providence and we love it. Great teachers, warm, welcoming environment, clean, well kept facility. The principal is awesome. PTA is very active.

The FCPS boundaries are affected by both the location of the schools and the requirement that all Fairfax City students attend the city-owned/county-operated schools.

But for that, some Fairfax City residents would attend Woodson or Oakton, and more county residents would attend Fairfax.

I hadn't heard about this. Is this a sure thing? I know that for Lanier, they're starting a modified version of AAP this year in hopes of becoming a center in the future, but there's no firm date for that.

I have nieces that go there. So impressed with the annual carnival thingy they do. "Fun Fair" right? So fun. My kids join their cousins there each year. Really nice community.

LOL there is always one poster who loves to trot out the infamous trailer park! Which is not in Fairfax City actually. Which is equidistant to parts of Fairfax City as it is Penderbrook Golf Course. And the Govt Center. And Fairfax Corner. And right at the entrance to the upscale homes off off Waples Mill Rd heading up towards Lawyers Rd. Not too far from Waples Mill Elementary actually. Let's send them there....

Just like Lanier, local AAP services (which are NOT the same as a Center) are slowly in formation at Daniels Run & Providence. It is not confirmed to formally begin in 2018/2919

For those at Providence, how has it been with the new admin? I know that the previous principal was very popular and credited with really improving the school.

Dan Phillips was the AP under Jesse Kraft. Dan is great as principal. Very responsive, always visiting classrooms etc. I have also seen him in disciplinarian mode and he is no push over. Janice Suite is the lower grades AP. She's doesn't come across as warm and fuzzy as Dan but I still like her a lot. She is also always visiting classrooms, responsive to emails etc. There will be a new AP in the fall since Harry Belch is retiring.

My understanding was the the elementary schools (especially Daniels Run and FFX Villa) were generally viewed more favorably than Lanier. Not that any of them were viewed that poorly.

The families I know at each of those schools are happy with them. They're not rated as highly as the schools in Vienna or McLean, but that's due to a higher percentage of kids who are from lower income families or families where English isn't the first language spoken. But at the same time, they don't constitute so high of a percentage that they overwhelm the school. Also, Lanier will probably become an AAP center soon. Currently, many high-performing kids go to Rocky Run for AAP so that brings down the test scores for Providence.

Yes, the Lanier principal campaigned hard this year to attempt to get kids to stay in the pyramid for the "AAP like" offering starting this fall. They are trying to become official next year, but I understand there is a community input process to go through and such. If they become a center as they plan to, the high performing kids will bring scores up.

That's great to hear. I hope he's there for a long, successful run as well. It seems like continuity with good admin is a huge factor in a school's performance.

That makes me feel better because one thing I didn't like about Providence is that it doesn't seem as much of a "neighborhood" school due to its boundaries and location, as opposed to FFX Villa or Daniels Run. My house is actually closer to those to other two schools than Providence. That was just my impression, though. I don't have first-hand experience with the school.
