No, I actually go for the smaller local gigs and know they are getting paid well. I have no idea why you're so upset that you keep resorting to name calling, maybe you should take a deep breathe. If anyone is classless on here I’m sorry but it’s obviously you. Please grow up. |
I can't believe how cheap some people are. I was shocked by the the other thread about not tipping hotel maids, this more evidence of how clueless people are. You tip service people who work hard for low wages and do a good job. That's the rule. It's simple, memorize it, practice it. You may find that your generosity comes back around in good karma, and better yet good service in the future. |
It’s not a rule. And not all service people are compensated equally. Good for you, but there’s no point in trying to guilt people into seeing things how you do. |
|
I cringe at the low prices people pay for their maids on DCUM I guess they don't worry about having their toothbrushes pi$$ed on or spit in their milk.

I find that the idea of having to tip all these people is definitely not done by people who are actually rich but it is a popular thing among the upper middle class. I always feel like it's some bizarre attempt by them to prove that they are rich or something. Rich people just have the bill paid and aren't worried about tipping or providing snacks. They don't need to prove to worker bee's that they are benevolent and have money. |
There are rich people who are neurotically cheap and that is probably how they got so rich. Their greed is their religion. They are stingy all day, every day. There are other cultures that don't tip well or at all. I have been to restaurants in DC and Maryland where they automatically add an 18% gratuity to the bill because the local customers don't generally practice tipping. It's a cultural thing, certain groups of people don't top regardless of their economic status. Maybe the OP and her DH are in this category. It doesn't excuse not tipping, but it could explain it. |
Tipping everyone doesn’t make you a better person. Might help you sleep at night though I guess. I tip, but not always and certainly not for the sake of tipping. That would be stupid. |
| I think OP knew she made a mistake by not tipping, that is why she posted the question. But she can do better going forward. |
| I have never heard of tipping painters. It's ridiculous. Come on people. Do you tip the cashiers at Walmart? Because I guarantee you they make about the same as the painters. |

Tipping is a inherently flawed custom that we need to faze out as a society, not grow to more trades such as tipping painters.
Go to Japan and learn. Pay everyone a fair price for their work, so they have a documented reliable source of income. In the interim, if it bothers you, take the time to hire good painters who take pride in their work and are a small operation. Dont hire a sleezebag who sends out day labourers, pays them under the table or whatever. Then you wont have people far less fortunate coming into your home and you wont be feeling sorry for your painters. |
| Just some food for thought. We are having a fence installed and received estimates from 6 companies. 5 companies are within a few hundred dollars of each other. The 6th company doubled the other estimates. The catch? This company is composed of a few retired/active firefighters that they run together. They split the payment between themselves, there is no “big boss”. If I went with them I wouldn't be tipping any additional amount since for me this is already more than accounted for in the 100% increase of the estimate. It’s not always black and white. It wouldn’t be “cheap” to not tip in this case. The holier than thou types on here need to relax a little. If you really want to make a difference in peoples lives there are more effective ways than via tipping, but you already know that I’m sure. |

No. They already charge us double based on our address. We can barely afford them as it is. An I have never heard of anyone tipping a painter.
You tip employees who fall into the FLSA 'tipped employee' category, because under U.S. law those employers are allowed to pay them less than the minimum wage because they are receiving tips as part of their compensation. Painters absolutely do not fall into this category. |
Probably less. There are too many people on here that got suckered into the “I have to tip everyone, otherwise people will look down on me” mindset. It’s sad. |
| I think painters are trolling here. |
