Do you tip your paint crew?

Anonymous
We had a contractor and his crew of two painters wrap up a fairly sizeable job for us today--interiors, $5K. They were polite, professional and did a very thorough, beautiful job. We are very pleased with the work.

I asked my husband to double-check with the contractor to see if a tip was customary. He said that, based on Angie's List research, he is confident that this type of work doesn't require a tip.

Just to double check and make sure we aren't being rude, I wanted to check with DCUM. What say ye?

No, you don't tip painters. You can however offer them some water or a can of soda if you happen to have some. But not required and no tipping.

I wouldn’t. I give snacks/drinks while on the job, you're not expected to pay more than the agreed upon price.

Thank you!

Yes, I've given tips before at the end of large jobs, specifically when there was a crew (not the owner of the company) doing the work and I was happy with the job. I always lean towards tipping vs not when in doubt though, just my personal rule of thumb.

Yes, you should tip at least $25 each to the crew. Always tip the worker bees.

OK, well, just to save everyone yet another snarky DCUM thread, the ship has sailed, and we've paid and thanked them.

Yes it's required, but if you are too poor to tip, the workers will understand that you can't afford it. They can afford water too.

Well I hope you don't need them to come back for future painting. You're blacklisted.

Nope, I just don’t pay more than I need to for no reason. They are getting paid a decent hourly rate (you must be thinking about food service). “You r a dumb s o b” if you just tip everyone by default. If I was cheap I wouldn’t have payed 6k for a paint job. I guess you also tip your ISP for their services? (LOL, give me a break...)

You do you, and I’ll do me friend. If you have nothing of value to add then maybe you shouldn’t add anything at all if the best you can come up with is to insult someone for their choice.

If you have people working hard in your home for low wages, you tip them. You classless idiot. They are aware that you paid the boss thousands for their hard work. Jerk!

Regardless of what anyone says, tipping is not “required” by any stretch of the word. Sure it’s appreciated, but it’s certainly not “expected” or required. If you have extra cash on hand and won’t miss it then go for it, otherwise I wouldn’t worry about it.
