NCS impressions

Those NCS parents who think every girl, but especially theirs, should've gotten into HYPS are simply deluded. The quality of college choices available to these girls is a direct result of their efforts, not the schools's guidance prowess. All the girls have benefited from an outstanding education in an enriching and beautiful environment where no opportunity was spared. However, not all of them will go to the most selective schools and you are not entitled to attend them by virtue of having received an NCS education.

NCS has an exhaustive college guidance handbook that lays out what is expected of students, parents and counselors during the process. The counselors do their part but they do not, and can not, part the red sea for you. In fact, their college guidance is so good, that it has spawned a thriving international business whose cachet is deeply tied to NCS.

I think there is a group of families at ALL schools, public and private, that believe college guidance counselors manage expectations by encouraging students to aim low. An offshoot of this theory is that counselors "save" spots for select families or encourage certain families in a better direction.

This never made sense to me since it is in the counselor's interest to get as many kids as possible into great schools while making sure there are no bad surprises.

In any event, it was definitely not our personal experience going through the process at NCS but am aware of the rumors.

Strained relationship with STA the last few years.

Inpresssions so far: great teachers, beautiful campus, amazing resources, supportive and caring admistration, great community feeling, and very diverse

You sound like an incoming parent. Those impressions are all superficial. But the skeletons have been discussed in many other threads. And actually, all schools have some skeletons too.

Not superficial. I also have those impressions and my DD has already graduated.

That's cause so many of the boys are proud chauvinists.

Nice way to deflect and totally untrue. My son is at STA and neither he nor his classmates in the upper school are chauvinists. NCS is an utter crap show compared to STA. It is common knowledge that STA is a better envirnment for students in every way. Its no surprise that many STA boys' sisters go to Holton, Potomac, SR, Visi, and other schools with better balance and morals and behavior. The ONLY thing about NCS that makes it a top school is its rigorous and greuling academics. Its social enviroment is toxic.

Shows that you don't actually have a daughter at NCS.

Remember the Google doc kept by the now-senior class a couple of years ago, in which they detailed all the sexual harassment and chauvinism that they had experienced from boys at STA?

It is absolutely true. I actually typed out and didn't post a whole slew of awful acts and absolutely sexist behavior perpetrated by some STA teenagers against young women not just at NCS but other schools. Then I deleted it, because many of those acts were told to me by my NCS daughter and her friends, and I won't violate their confidence.

Fine young "men," indeed. As if you know, based on how they talk in front of you, how all STA students treat young women.

Our daughter loves everything about NCS and has many friends at STA.

Nothing toxic about the social environment at NCS. Very supportive community and the girls are generally happy (although stressed, as most high schoolers in this area are). Stop perpetuating rumors that may have been true years ago but bear no resemblance to the current reality.

You clearly don't have any knowledge at all. That doc was started and kept by NCS girls, one of whom gave an STA boy access so he could refute what a girl had written about him. There was more than enough guilt on both sides there too, the girls and the boys.

Please. it is totally true now. Why do you think many of the 28 girls applying out for highschool want to leave. One is even willing to go to Wilson rather than return to NCS after not getting into the school she wanted.

NCS's current environment is utterly toxic and the behavior it breeds amongst the girls is awful.

I am sorry if your daughter is not happy at NCS or had a bad experience. I really do mean that. All I can say is that my daughter is having a great experience there and I hope it continues.
