Most of the councilmembers don't have school age children - if they even have children - and they aren't attuned to the needs of families. Most families want a solid, nearby school to send their kids to. Hard for the Ward 5 DCPS schools to perform at a high level with a multiplication of charters and most families aiming to enter the charter system. |
Except Ward 5 doesn't really have a higher number of families seeking charters or lottery seats than other wards -- http://www.myschooldc.org/sites/default/files/dc/sites/myschooldc/2016_Lottery_Applications_byWardandGrade.pdf |
There are charters all over the city, and people from most parts of the city apply for charters. Would be great to see the data on what wards the applicants end up going to and how many go in-ward vs. out of ward. |
| this Ward 5 parent is grateful that high quality charters are available nearby and my kids are thriving in one of them. |
Congrats on your luck in the lottery! Everybody isn't a winner to say the least.. |
I'm the previous poster you quoted above. I wrote my comment because so many of the previous comments seemed to be criticizing the idea that Mundo Verde should open in this location. I support it because I think it will increase the number of desirable school seats, which I think should be encouraged. To try to prevent it from happening because of the effect it would have on other schools that are less desirable to parents seems like getting backwards IMO. |
Seriously. These posts by Ward 5 gentrifiers who wish charters would disappear are getting old. 75% of kids go to a school that is NOT their in-boundary school. Ward 5 is not that special. |
