| Is the plans for the 4401 8th Street NE building? [former Potomac Lighthouse / right next to Scrilli School] |
|
Mundo Verde is hoping to open a second campus there. The proposed deal, which is now open for public comment, would be a lease-purchase agreement.

| Wow... So LAMB, Shining Stars, both Noyes, and Mundo Verde all in 5B.. |
You prefer it sit empty? I think you forgot Perry Street Prep. And LAMB only has a lease to be there through 2020. No guarantee they will be there beyond that. |
I would prefer it be a great school that neighborhood children have an opportunity to attend - and not just a lottery chance. |
What about the DCPS in the neighborhood? Let's work on making those great schools if that's your concern. |
| Wow. how many new spots would that open up for next year, any idea? |
It's outlined in the last 3 page of the proposal linked above. New campus would open in SY 18-19 and offer 34 Pk3, 54 PK4 and 92 K that year. |
Sure..... not that easy with charters multiplying in the neighborhood. |
Most of the kids in those charters aren't going to be IB for those schools. |
Not the charters' fault if DCPS won't open up a building.
|
DCPS doesn't have to be the only system directly serving communities. |
This is why Bowser has this proposal for inbounds for charters. I see this dilemma here, though. |
The walkability preference (which the Council doesn't seem to want to endorse) is really narrowly tailored to places where students are close to a charter campus and quite far from a DCPS. That just wouldn't apply in this second of Ward 5. There are DCPS schools close by. But the PP doesn't think they are 'good.' |
You obviously don't know the Ward 5 neighborhoods. Many, many Michigan Park, Brookland, Edgewood kids are going into the charter system, and it is almost impossible for DCPS to compete - but they should still try as long as the exist. |
