Another DC girl (10) missing this morning (Brookland) - why isn't this top news line?

Anonymous
To be fair, Mayor has said there is no uptick in number reported missing vs same time last year, that they are just using social media more. However, the timing of it (so many in short 2.5 weeks) seems more than worrisome. I want the mayor to show me how many were reported missing in 2 weeks last year.

We care, we appreciate the Amber alerts and look for them. Then find them. Your outrage is misplaced, Lap.

I'll second this, with the exception of them all being found. Most of the missing are found. Everyone remembers Relisha Rudd.

Public perception of the lives of urban youth is that their home, and frequently school, lives are unstable. So people don't take "missing" to mean abducted, but that their whereabouts are temporarily unknown to the person who reported them missing.

Really? Did you get an Amber Alert this morning for this girl? I didn't.

You need to look up the criteria for Amber Alert. Every missing child doesn't meet the criteria. The child has to be in imminent danger AND law enforcement has to have descriptive information about the abductor (among other things). If they don't have information about the person who might have abducted the child, they cannot issue an Amber Alert.

I know what the criteria for an Amber Alert is. I was responding directly to the highlighted portion of the PP, in which that PP stated that they appreciated the Amber Alerts and used that information to look for the child in question. If Critical Missing Persons reports went out the same way Amber Alerts went out, I'd believe that the PP knew about this girl and the other dozen children who have gone missing in the last couple of weeks. Since they do not, I will assume that the PP was downplaying the issue, which I think is supported by stating that the children are all found, which is not true.

They haven't found any of the last 10 girls. Who are you talking about?

I am the originally quoted PP. Yes, I am downplaying the issue. Have you heard the story of the boy who cried wolf? I think you should read it.

Thank god.

Most of the time, the frantic family/friends of the missing person will be the ones to alert the media and start posting flyers. The police don't do that until they are reasonably sure that the missing person is endangered.

I would think that a missing 10 year old - where school and family have no clue where she is would be considered endangered almost right away. Have the police said anything about this child?

No, they've found several of them. Go read the MPD Twitter account before posting.
